“Enjoyed this hotel and can't wait to return!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2010

We chose this Hilton location for 2 reasons; location to PATH and price. Having never stayed in New Jersey, we didn't know what to expect. We were so happy with this hotel. From our arrival late Friday night, 12/10/2010 to our departure on Monday afternoon, 12/13/2010, we had a wonderful stay. The staff over the weekend were excellent. Our room could not be upgraded because they were sold out but we were given breakfast vouchers for Sat and Sun and were given access to the concierge level for Monday instead. The restaurant is great...staff and food. They made us feel like old friends. We will definately stay here again. A big shout out goes to Gamil in the Market Street Bar and Grill (you are a great addition to this restaurant!!!) and to Warren Mowle, Assistant Front Office Mgr. and the weekend/evening front desk staff...You rock!!

Having access to Penn Station was so nice...especially during the rainy days we were there. So much easier to navigate than the NY subway and the staff at Penn Station will help you and direct you and give you suggestions to make your commute easier. Big thanks to them as well.

Stay was wonderful- clean rooms, professional and friendly staff. Really good meal in restaurant. Ahmet- an engineer- was the best!!! Our car died in lot and he was very helpful and kind. He went well beyond what I ever would have expected in helping us. Excellent experience!

Spent two nights at the hotel on a weekend trip. We had tickets for the Andrea Bocelli concert at the nearby Prudential Center and used the hotel as our base. We opted to take a taxi from EWR airport ($15 plus $1 per bag) and arrived less than 15 minutes later. I had booked a regular room, but requested an upgrade to the Presidential Suite on the Concierge level which we were given. As it was over a weekend, the Concierge lounge was closed, but we were given vouchers for free breakfasts every morning in the restaurant. The room itself was very spacious, and included a small kitchen, dining room, living room, and half bath, as well as the bedroom with super comfy king-sized bed and full bathroom. I was surprised that the bathroom didn't included a jetted tub and that wifi wasn't complimentary on this floor, but otherwise, can't complain. For breakfast, we enjoyed a buffet which included orange juice, coffee, eggs, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, cold cereals, potatoes, waffles, blinis, etc.

The hotel is connected to the PATH station and the Prudential Center via the covered Gateway Center. Access to downtown Manhattan via the WTC stop costs $1.75 pp and took about 22 minutes. The hotel runs a shuttle to EWR on the hour. Since the timing did not work for our flight, we asked the doorman to get us a cab....instead he said he would drive us and promptly loaded us into one of the two hotel shuttle busses for the short ride.

It was that kind of service that sold us on this hotel. Every staff member we encountered at the hotel was attentive and made us feel like valued guests. We would (and will!) definitely stay at this hotel on future trips.

Traveling to Newark for a meeting needing an overnight stay. The Hilton was a good choice. I arrived from Boston via Amtrak and walked to the hotel. Finding the hotel was a bit confusing given the many walkways in Penn Station. SIgnage was pretty bad so I would strongly advise finding a cop in the station (there are many) and just asking for directions. The walk is okay as long as you are comfortable walking through a populated train terminal with all the variety you might expect.

Check in was uneventful. The room was very clean, spacious enough to be very comfortable. The bed was very comfortable as well. The heating system was a bit noisy but not too bad. Overall a good location for an incoming train traveler. If I were coming back to Newark I would return even though I thought it was a bit pricey. But I imagine that the convenience of a 15 minute train ride to New York City adds to the value - even if I did not need that. I am not sure I would consider this an alternative to staying in New York if that was my final destination. Comparisons of walking around New York after dinner and walking around Newark make the extra dollars of staying in New York worth it for me. But again if you have to be in Newark, this is a good place to stay.

Concierge floor was worth it as well. Decent appetizers in the evening and morning breakfast for those that want scrambled egs, sausage or yogurt. If you upgrade your room it is a value rather than spending on breakfast in the dining room.

If you are looking for cheap accommodation for NYC, I would recommend this hotel. It's location to Newark airport is also very convenient.

I chose this hotel so I was close to work but with easy quick access to Manhattan for shopping. I felt quite safe using the walkway to Penn Station but as a lone female traveller I did not feel comfortable in Newark on my own (you could argue that you don't need to venture out into Newark anyway).

The hotel itself was ok, given the price, however I was expecting more from the Hilton brand. I entered the lobby overladen with luggage to be surprisingly ignored by the staff. No major issues on hygiene although I didn't think the carpets were very clean and the bathroom smelt damp. The charge for WiFi was disappointing. Check out was annoying slow - I should have taken advantage of the quick check out service which I believe was advertised in the lobby.

I wish we could have afforded to stay in Manhattan, because there was not much else going for this hotel. I expected far better from Hilton. Our room keys failed on two consecutive nights, and frequently failed in the elevators. Our Hilton Honors floor was dirty for the entire 6 nights we stayed - glasses that were beside our door when we arrived were still there when we left. There were crushed crisps all over the floor in front of our room, and several plastic clips strewn around the floor - all indications the floor was not vacuumed in the week we stayed! I also did not get the promised extra towels in the room - since we didn't even HAVE a room at check-in, and it took them some time to even accommodate our request for a king bed - despite the room being paid in advance and in full.

Housekeeping was hit and miss. I requested the bin be left beside the bed - and it was - on two of the six nights. We got turn down service (complete with bottled water and a couple of Hilton chocolates) on nights three and four only, and on the first two nights (Saturday and Sunday) we didn't get the toiletries refreshed and just one fresh towel and one facewasher. The first night I was pulling the feather quilt off the bed (despite requesting a feather-free room) and noticed the top sheet was not only not tucked in, but folded back on itself. We had been short-sheeted! I remade the bed with the sheet tucked in...when the sheets were changed on our fourth day, the sheet had been put on sideways and was not tucked over the foot of the bed again, necessitating my remaking the bed yet again.

The room was very warm, despite attempting to set the thermostat to 65, it never felt any cooler, necessitating sleeping atop the bed with nothing but the sheet. The air condition unit is also exceptionally and unacceptably loud when in operation.

The lobby and the hallways smelled just like the casinos in Vegas - fake vanilla air freshener mixed with stale cigarette smoke, and sometimes it was nauseatingly strong.

Few of the eateries, including the Starbucks, opened on the weekend. A walk into the area surrounding the hotel turned into a nerve-wracking search for food among an almost entirely Black/Hispanic/Latino community who looked at us white folk like we had three heads and did not belong there. We were definitely the minority group there. Finding gluten-free options was an adventure in itself, but the hotel restaurant, The Market Place was reasonably accommodating, if a little on the expensive side.

This hotel is really showing its age, and desperately needs a revamp of not only the accommodations and corridors, but the customer service and housekeeping standard as well. The lack of complimentary wireless internet access anywhere on the premises was utterly disappointing, given the price we paid for our room and the length of stay. We couldn't even get it at Starbucks next door!

The free popcorn in the lobby on two nights was a nice touch, though.

This hotel has the best staff ever. From check-in to check-out, everyone that served us was just fantastic. The hotel is very convenient if you are visiting New York City since it is attached to Newark Penn Station. The hotel itself is older and the lobby and rooms should be modernized. However, the place is clean and our bed was very comfortable. If in the Newark area again, this hotel will be our base! Many thanks to the staff at the Hilton Newark Penn Station.
