We stayed here September 2012 rather than staying in an over-priced, cramped Manhattan hotel. The Hilton was absolutely perfect location-wise. There's a walkway directly connecting the foyer of the hotel to the station where you can get both Amtrak and PATH trains to and from NYC. Note that PATH is way cheaper ($2 each way) and gets you quickly to the World Trade Center. It also goes to 33rd Street but avoid this route at the weekends as it takes absolutely ages (doubles back on itself via Hoboken). You don't even go outside onto the street and the walkway is very well lit and felt extremely safe. Newark has a bad reputation but staying at this particular hotel makes it extremely safe, and you get so much more for your money.
So the hotel itself was also excellent. Big spacious room, huge comfortable bed, relatively quiet and efficient AC, spotlessly clean bathroom, decent selection of TV channels, efficient check in and out. Pretty much everything you would want!
The only disappointment was no free wireless internet in the room (I mean really, in this day and age they think it's still acceptable to charge $10 per day?!). However we got free wifi in the foyer around the business centre, but it was pretty sluggish to be honest. You'll find everyone hanging out there late in the evenings with their phones and iPads, you won't be alone!
For our purposes this hotel was perfect. Maybe 5 minute walk to PATH, 25 minute train to the WTC, so about 30 minutes in total to get into the centre of Manhattan. WTC is a great base as well - easy walking to WTC memorial, ferries, South Street seaport, Battery Park and very short walk to the metro itself to head further up the island. Even getting to JFK airport was relatively painless (PATH to WTC, underground walkway to Chambers Street, line A express to Howard Beach, then AirTrain to JFK - $9 in total - two $2 trips and $5 for the AirTrain).
So much better than the options we found on Manhattan itself which were either ludicrously expensive or pretty shabby looking. Would definitely stay here again next time I'm in NYC,
