I think this was the fifth Courtyard by Marriott I've stayed at, and it checks all of the boxes inside the walls. Comfortable, modern decor, nice lobby with overpriced food and drinks, etc. My experience was more directly the result of this being the Courtyard by Marriott for the Newark airport, which just throws all sorts of monkeys into the wrench.
There is a free shuttle that runs to and from the airport every half hour. We had a meeting in Manhattan so we hired a car service from the hotel to the meeting, which was on Hudson St.(just inside the Holland Tunnel). It was literally 10 miles. That costed $98. Yep, $98 for 10 miles. The other option would be to take the shuttle from the hotel to the airport and the train from the airport to Penn Station then take a cab down to the meeting, which seemed more complicated and time consuming than we were willing to accept.
Our adventure commenced when we attempted to take a cab (hailed on the street) from Manhattan back to the hotel. I thought that any cab driver would have GPS, and if he didn't know how to get there he should have told us so. So I told him basically how to get started. Holland Tunnel to the Pulaski Skyway, continuing south on 1&9.
This hotel, I guess based on construction or the confluence of so many highways around the airport or whatever finds itself in a physical location that is impossible to find unless you know exactly how to do it. Once we got into the vicinity of the hotel, we drove past it to the left or right something like seven times and could not figure out how to get there. The cab driver was stopping in the middle of the freeway waiting on me to tell him which direction to go. Finally, we started getting to signs for the airport, and I told the driver to just take us to the aiport where I knew we could take the shuttle. I was absolutely livid at this point.
Once we got on the shuttle, I paid attention to the route. We leave the airport and actually drive by the hotel across the highway immediately. Then we proceeded to make something like 583 turns and change direction about 347 times before we finally end up on the road that the hotel is on. Indeed, you could probably walk to it in about the same time the shuttle takes.
Oh yeah, I brought up directions on my phone to try to help the cab driver before. Once you get close to the hotel, the directions stop naming the actual roads, and it just reads "after 467 feet, turn right. After 349 feet, turn right." I swear to finally get there, the last four directions were FOUR right turns, which is a GOD DAMNED square.
Anyway, yeah, if I ever have a destination in the city ever again, I don't care how close it is to NJ, I am flying into LGA or JFK.
I know all of this doesn't really have anything to do with the actual hotel, but I thought the story was interesting. Future travellers beware.

Thank you very much for taking time out to review your recent stay with us, we truly appreciate your input, indeed this is a difficult area to navigate with the quagmire of roads and infamous New Jersey U-Turns and Jug Handle turns.

We do offer great tips and tricks on our hotel webpage to ease this frustration and a quick call to the hotel and one of our knowledgeable staff can easily assist and then on arrival guests can enjoy a glass of wine at our Bistro or a Starbucks Coffee.
For ease of access to NYC, our sister hotels at Newark Downtown and Jersey City are both within short walking distance to the PATH train system.
