“great for a family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

Just a 'fun restaurant' if you are with a group looking for a very laid-back evening. It is truly an 'experience' but not for everyone. Read reviews and comments before you go so you know what to expect. It is not for a romatic evening but good with a group of friends or familes with children. But be prepared for the bill - it is not cheap but the food is good and you may have leftovers.

“One of a kind.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Sammy's is a third generation institution in the area. As noted, there's no sign. You need to know it's there. Hint- right across from the Ralston Mill.

The deal is simple: you order when you go in. They send you to the bar downstairs while they cook your meal. When it's ready they call you up to the family style seating. You get salad, entree, sides and dessert for one price.

Steaks are excellent. Dry-aged Porterhouse on the bone is superb. They will cook it exactly as you specify.

Value? 38 bucks buys the salad, steak, fries, veggie and dessert. That doesn't seem out of line. Good steakhouses are charging that for the steak alone.

So, Sammy's is an experience and a local gem. I loved it. If your looking for the red walls, dim lighting and leather banquette; this isn't it. If your looking for a solid meal with a minimum of fuss, this is it. Great family place, great carnivore place. It's on my rotation.

Food is good and with lots of sides is a ok value. Fun atmosphere at the bar with games and stocked bar.

“You have to know exactly where it is!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

The best of everything they serve, but you have to be content with just a few choices...you also have to be ready for an unusually organized eatery with almost NO service! However, no one seems to be unhappy. Still no sign outside the building on a rural country road.

“Old time Favorite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

So many people just "don't get" this place. It is expensive but you do get your salad and dessert in the price and there is value if you are not eating huge portions of meat or lobster. I've been a regular for 15 years and my family still finds it to be a treat but you really have to plan your trip wisely or you will get killed by the wait. The bar area is a blast and serves nice drinks. Wine list is OK and has most wines listed on Half price Monday's. My go to meal is cold lobster cocktail, sammy shrimp over pasta( Garlic lover heaven) , veal and lamb combo and the good old brownie and ice cream. The ice cream is all hand made from a local shop. You tend to see the same faces every time you visit for one reason, the old girl still has game!! Watch the booze, the Mendham cops are brutal!!
