From the outside, Il Vicolo looks very unassuming, sitting on the side of a strip of stores. Once you go inside, however, the atmosphere is fine and the food is quite good. I was searching for a good Italian restaurant within 5 miles or so of Short Hills that could accommodate our party of 15-20 people and had at least a semi-private room (which turned out to be a lot harder than it sounds, within a reasonable price range), and Il Vicolo turned out to be an excellent choice. We arrived at 6 pm and were seated in a 2nd room which was set up for 3 large parties. The other parties did not arrive until 7 pm, and although by then there were perhaps 50-60 people total in the room, the noise level was acceptable.
All of us were quite happy with our appetizers and entrees, ranging from fish to pasta to veal. We had diners ranging in age from 8 to 80, including a vegetarian and a lactose-intolerant guest, and the menu offered options for everyon at fair prices (entrees were approx. $15-23). The servers had trouble remembering who ordered what for each course, but this was just a minor note. We would definitely go back next time we are in this area again.
