“Where everyone want's to know your name!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Bell's continues to be a friendly, warm place with good food, that is fresh, well made and presented by an incredibly friendly and helpful staff. We frequent Bells on a pretty regular basis and order primarily from the specials board. Despite what some folks have said the food is still really good and the alleged sale of watered down drinks has not (yet) been either substantiated or adjudicated by the NJ liquor control board. The steaks and fresh seafood are always really good. This place is a really good value and a just plain fun place to dine.

“Good Italian food that is OK for families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

We frequent Bell's Tavern several times a year, typically on an impromptu basis. Food is served at the bar in the front or side tables. A separate dining room that is suitable for families is attached. The menu is largely static, but has some interesting Italian food options. A chalk board has daily specials, some of which are recurring.

We enjoy the Southern Citrus Salad which is fresh, with candied pecans and mandarin oranges. My wife commonly orders the Carbonara, which she finds consistently excellent. She recently ordered crab cakes off of the daily specials and was underwhelmed given the abundance of "filler". My favorite is the Bell's Gamberetti, which is a pasta dish with shrimp, spinach, pine nuts and garlic. I most recently had the Baked Ziti which is 3 cheese and meat sauce and was pleased. We have ordered most pasta dishes on the standard menu and find them to be well prepared and flavorful.

Bell's is a popular place amongst locals, generally has a pleasant atmosphere, but it is packed on the weekend and noise levels get uncomfortable. We have ordered from the bar while we wait for a table...no reservations...but our experience is largely with a limited wine list. The wine list focuses upon value wines, Pricing for food and wine is reasonable. They do not accept credit cards, so plan accordingly.

“Downhill”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

Bells has been gradually trending downward over the last four years or so to a point we have stopped eating there. Watery sauces, over cooked pasta, low quality meat and seafood is now the norm. The only thing that has gone up is their menu prices. Just recently they were busted by the NJ liquor control board for selling swill or watered down scotch laced with rubbing alcohol and Carmel coloring. That was the last straw for me and Bells.

“Local place, decent food, but very noisy on weekends.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

I went with friends on a Saturday night and waited for 15 mins or so for a table. It was crowded and very noisy. The food was pretty good, nothing really to brag about. However, I am a vegetarian, and most of the dishes had meat, so perhaps I should reserve judgment. I had the half order of pesto pasta, and was glad I did not order the full plate. Salad was good. The bread pudding dessert, though tauted as excellent, was not particularly special, with the bread rather starchy tasting, and the sauce a bit too sweet. Except for the noise, the place has a nice tavern-sort-of-feeling, and there were plenty of local people at the bar and tables. Go for the atmosphere, but if you want to have a conversation with your table mates without shouting, try a week night. By the ebd of the evening, we were hoarse from yelling at each other in order to be heard.
