We stayed in Room 102 for two nights in November 2007. There were several problems with the room and the service:
1. Two of the window handles were completely broken and detached.
2. The drains in both the shower and sink were almost completely blocked.
3. The wallpaper was pealing up away from the wall over the heating unit.
4. One of the armchairs was threadbare on both arms.
5. A drawer in one of the bedside tables had no knob, only a hole.
6. There was a bobby pin on the floor, from a previous visitor.
7. There was no evening turn down and no room cleaning during the day, until we called twice. And the cleaning was done that day at 5:30 p.m., an inconvenient time for guests preparing for evening activities.
8. The view from our windows was of a pretty stream, but it was marred by piles of dirty laundry.
The hotel has all the earmarks of a bygone gentility. And the staff seem kind enough, although either not well-trained or well-served by management. Possibly they need more support or training.
This was, sadly, the disappointment in an otherwise joyous wedding weekend celebration.
When I called to report our experience, Kathryn listened, and then hung up. No apology, not any inkling of “getting back to us.” In December, I wrote a polite follow-up letter to the hotel, but received no response. Quite a surprise from such a well-known establishment in a pretty town.
