My flight was delayed and, although I had a guaranteed room, the hotel advised me at 12:45 AM that it had given my room away. I spoke with the manager, Michael Boyle, by phone (he was not on the property) and he said he was sorry but the best they could do was transfer me to another Candlewood Suites five miles away. The desk clerk, JV, appeared to be the only person on staff. He is in his mid-20s. While we were discussing my options, I asked, "What if your mom came to my home, Detroit, and was told she was being transferred to a hotel five miles away, even though she had a guaranteed reservation?" His response was, "My mom's in the hotel business and she knows the penalty for arriving late." I was absolutely stunned! It was as though I had somehow delayed the flights to Newark! I was truly worried that my safety might be at risk - what if I got in the cab and I was suddenly told I owed a lot of money? As it happened, the cab company was reliable and the other Candlewood Suites in Secaucus was nice. I would NEVER NEVER NEVER use the Candlewood Jersey City again and I truly feel you're at risk if you do. I was teaching a class for the Port Authority of NY-NJ and had chosen this hotel because it was in walking distance of the PATH station and also the Port Authority offices.
