We go to Atlantic City for a fun weekend about 8 times a year. We have stayed at this hotel maybe 40 times over the past 7 years. We even became engaged there, and I host business conferences there. We love it. We prefer staying at this classy historic resort with superb service as opposed to the smoky crowded craziness of the AC casinos. I enjoy being able to sleep with an open window, get fresh air, and go for a jog around the golf course the next day.
I noticed recently on the Marriott web site that you can also book nightly rooms at the timeshare 'villas' next door. I did a couple of months ago, and it was fine. The units are well appointed and very nice in a synthetic, cheaply constructed, kind of way. Usually it is just the two of us and we don't need two bedrooms and a kitchen.
I did a few weeks ago when I went to AC with a friend on a Sat. night and thought it would be nice to have separate bedrooms. What transpired the next morning turned this into perhaps the worst hospitality experience I've ever had - and I've stayed thousands of hotel nights at hundreds of hotels around the world.
It was a Saturday night and we were out at the casinos very late. Starting at 10am the next morning, the staff kept calling constantly to tell us that it is past checkout and to leave immediately. I told them that we'd like to go back to sleep and check out at noon, and they said no. Nothing in the room, on their materials, or what we were given at check-in indicated that checkout time is at 10am. It's not like this is a business hotel, and I was told they were empty the next night. It was absolutely shocking to be tired, showering and packing up, and to be getting inexplicably belligerant and harassing calls every couple minutes.
I now notice a few weeks later on my credit card that on top of the $300 for the night, they charged me another $100 for late checkout (we left at 11am). I now realize that the whole harassment campaign was a method for these time-share hustlers to make another $100? It was a very disturbing experience. So, be warned.
