I arrived late following a concert that I worked on Long Island. It took 20 minutes to check in to a pre-paid room (it seemed like the woman behind the counter was busy surfing the internet). When I got to the room, it was beyond filthy. The maid left the master key for the whole hotel(!) in the room, along with hairballs, empty drink containers, and other items remaining from the previous guests. The shower and sink were filthy, the toilet ran constantly, and the sheets and pillowcases were obviously not changed. No HBO (as promised), no TV remote, no alarm clock. When I called the front desk, she had me wait another 30 minutes (which was 3am) for new sheets and pillows. There were piles of dirt and dust in every corner, stains on the carpet and the desk chair (god knows what), and a caked on film of dust over the bathroom vent and the air conditioner. Let's not forget that this hotel is directly across the street from the G Washington Bridge entrance, which means constant noise and fumes. I tried to for about an hour to get some sleep, but the filth, noise and fumes made it impossible. I packed up, went to the front desk, and demanded a refund.
The attendant was apologetic, she said the maid left early and without explanation. However she was not helpful in finding me a place to stay, at least for a nap and a shower. She had no number for the hotel chain or the Choice network. On my own, I called Choice Priveleges, and found another NJ hotel that had a room available. The FT Lee hotel had no printer, so I had to write out treacherous directions, 20 turns, and of course I got lost and did not find the hotel until 6am.
This hotel COST me a nights sleep, and it beat out some pretty nasty one-star hotels that I visited in Europe as a student for the title - THE WORST HOTEL EXPERIENCE EVER. If you are desperate, do not sleep here, you'd be better off sleeping in your car, or going elsewhere.
