Wow! What a charming find!
We (family with children and some friends) were on a travel weekend and always like to eat at non-chain places. We made a reservation for 7:30 on a Saturday night. Arrived and had NO IDEA that it was BYOB! (We don't have this in Virginia!) The owner took pity and gave us house wine at no charge, and gave us tips on where to go out and buy a few bottles.
This small place is clearly a beloved family business. There was live entertainment and obviously a lot of regulars, some of whom had no qualms about getting up with the band and joining in!
I asked for salad, and when I asked for the waiter if it was a tossed salad, he said no, "but I will be happy to make you one!". I declined, not wanting to be a bother, but he brought me one regardless! (My blue cheese dressing was home-made.) They catered to the kids' whims as well. Were amazingly patient, flexible and creative.
The food came quickly and was very tasty. Portions were reasonable; prices good. The chef came out at the end and offered us some of his special after-dinner-drink chocolate mystery concoction. I have no IDEA what it was, but MAN, was it yummy! The waiter offered the kids dessert. They had flan on the menu that night, and the boys were unsure what that was. He offered to bring them a taste, so out came a plate, two forks and a small size for tasting. They enjoyed it, so we got them more. A win for us, and a win for Marlina. No wasted food and a sale on dessert. It was these little things that really added to the experience.
The bill at the end for 5 adults and 2 kids was $122!
We were in there for over two hours and enjoyed every minute. Will definitely be going back there next time we are in Deptford. Well done Marlina!
