“Chirashi A new treat for me”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

Upon entering this restaurant you will not be overwhelmed by the decor, simple, comfortable, inviting, yet you will be overwhelmed with the food and service. We kept things simple, we were in the mood for sushi so we had a edmame appetizer, then ordered the Charishi. The sushi rice and bowl covered with all types of sashimi was out of this world! The fish was incredibly fresh and delectable. Buttery texture, thick slices, each piece was a palletable delight.

“This is the real deal!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

Really not so far outside town (and even accessible by PATCO train to Ferry Ave) is authentic JAPANESE-owned/operated Japanese. The fish quality is stellar and the atmosphere is like family.

“Authentic Japanese Restaurant around Philly, S. Jersey & DE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

For more than 10 years, we have been enjoying authentic Japanese cuisine at Sagami. None of those sushi rolls with cream cheese and non-Japanese sounding name such as dragon or philly roll...this is simply a Japanese inspired cuisine. My wife and I would consistently order Chirashi for each of us since this is the best way to enjoy the food. We never ask to make a substitute on a particular sashimi piece...trust the chef and eat what is available fresh.
Sashimi is the top menu on every visit except for Hamachi Kama (grilled yellow tail's cheek). Sake (salmon) and Hamachi (Yellow Tail) are always fresh and sweet. Many years back, tuna sashimi (toro) comes in thick rectangular chunks. Last year, I noticed that this has changed to regular cut sashimi and has fallen to no.3 on my list.
Agedashi tofu are is must (deep fried tofu on a sweet broth) as an appetizer, and perhaps the hamachi kama (if they have still one). We have known one of the servers and she would always reserve one for us whenever we visit...it pays to connect and know one of them.
Tip: Come in at 5 PM every Sunday and you are guaranteed a spot, or call in advanced.

Two weekends in a row place is packed. Fresh sashimi, excellent eggplant with chicken miso paste, & reasonably priced. Limited menu but all good.

“Best Japanese in Philadelphia, if not the East Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Forgive my audacity, but as an Asian American whose family is obsessed with quality Japanese food, I feel that I have a moderate expertise in Japanese food. We go to Asia regularly (Taiwan, Japan, Mainland China) and have Japanese whenever possible. Sagami through the years has easily the most consistent quality of any Japanese establishment in the States. Let me just say- do not go to Sagami for modern iconoclastic fusion Japanese. This is not Nobu, or Tsuki, or Morimoto. Just classic, delicious, sushi. Also, do not go to Sagami if you're looking for great service. That's not the point of Sagami. Nobody will pamper you, everyone speaks Japanese as their first language, so don't complain about it. Just go expecting great food, and you'll get it. Fish can always be fresh, that's not the mark of a great sushi chef. The chef must find the sweetest cut, with just enough fat to loosen the meat. I have always tasted great, melt-in-your-mouth fish at Sagami. Their agedashi tofu is still the best I have ever tasted, from Vancouver to Japan to Philadelphia. I hope I'm not too effusive here, but seriously, you should try it. If you're looking for classic Japanese with great cuts of fish and perfection on classic dishes, go to Sagami.

One more tip, go introduce yourself to Lou, he's the head sushi chef, owner, and one of the nicest, funniest people you'll ever meet. Next time you go back (which you will), he'll remember your name. Uncanny.
