“Best Subs anywhere hands down”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

I have been going to this place since it opened some 30 years ago, and through all the owners each has kept the quality of subs alive and wonderful, adding new subs....when it first open there were some 25 subs and now nearly 50....great sub, soups to die for and choice of many different drinks, side salads are amazing, It is a hole in the wall, little seating, but likely the best sub shop in New Jersey right here in little Clinton....we are lucky to have Scott and his crew here, just a great group of guys, helpful and I go there every week, once or three times and will keep returning...thanks guys for the always great service

“Awesome Subs & Soup!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Town favorite. Always great soup & subs. You can always get any sub fixings as a salad. Best to take out. The roast beef sub is outrageous! Beer cheese soup!

“Very good quality, which you'll pay for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

The subs here are what subs from a good sub shop SHOULD be but rarely ever are these days. Comparing a sub here to a sub bought at Subway would be like comparing an IMAX movie to watching one on your laptop. Having said that, the subs here aren't the cheapest in the world ... but you get what you pay for. And here, you are paying for quality and taste.

While places like Subway bake their 'fresh' bread in the store ... they use cheap manufacured bread mixes. Ye Old Sub base's bread is the real deal ... fresh deli bread. Light and airy and strong enough to hold in oil, vinegar or sauces.

The menu is HUGE. Unless you are a local ... you will probably want to take a minute or two to go through it all. I always go for my standard Italian sub when I go here but occasionally will switch it up a bit by going for one of their special sub creations. I have yet to try one of their sloppy joe subs, but have always been meaning to.

The cold cuts and cheese are what really sets the subs apart. You won't get a sub loaded with a brick of deli meat ... but even if you look at the sandwich and think it could contain a little more cold cuts for the price ... wait until you taste it. You only need a few pieces of each meat in the sandwich because they are so fresh and expensive, they pack a lot of taste.

The staff might be a little intimidating at first ... high school/college kids ... some heavy on the tattoos and piercings. While some may come off a little gruff at first, you can tell they know what they are doing when it comes to making subs and they usually joke around with you by the time you are leaving with a smile.

One suggestion you want to follow when you go here is ... unless you are really hungry, get the small sub. A large sub is double the price of the small sub, so if you are hungry afterwards you can always order another small sub for the same price. A large sub actually comes on two plates which is basically like ordering two sandwiches. Most small subs are between $5 - $6 each and are around 8 inches long. The large is double the price, so around $10 - $12 and twice the length. Essentially, when you order a large, you are ordering two smalls on two plates.

The macaroni and potato salad is top notch ... the type you would expect to find at a good deli. Heavy on the mayo ... but very tasty. I have never had the soup but hear it is amazing and homemade.

The decor is non-existant. This place probably looked the same in the 1970s and there are only 4 or 5 SMALL tables, so most likely you will be eating your sub outside. But if you do sit at a table, they bring the sub to you. I was a bit dissapointed the first time I went in because the British theme ends after the flag and Old English script on the windows. Inside, its just another American sub shop. I was expecting rich, dark woods, pictures of the Queen, British Kitch or even a British accented owner. But other than the flag on the window, its small town America inside, not Britian.

But ... you go for the taste ... not the atmosphere and Clinton has some nice spots to sit and eat. So, spend a little extra and get a tasty sub worthy of the price. I often order one sub to eat there and one to eat in the car ride back home when traveling in the area for business ... they are that good. $12 for a sub never tasted so good and much better than spending $12 on a burger at the stuffy, overpriced Clinton House.

“Real subs!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

Places like this are mostly extinct. Real bread, sandwiches with substantial quantity, and the quality of the subs can't be beat!
