We stayed at the Akwaaba by the Sea for two nights during the 4th of July holiday because I wanted to surprise my husband with a romantic, stress free escape from his work and celebrate the awaited arrival of our first child. Our "babymoon" was wonderful. Our room was the romantic Victorian "Dolly's Boudoir" with warm reds, pinks and deeply stained antique wood furniture. Monique and Joanna made us feel right at home. Monique sat us down upon arrival and using a map showed us the best places to eat, tour, site see, stroll, take pictures and just relax if we wanted to. We returned from our morning walks to a gourmet home cooked breakfast. The first day we had the best scrambled eggs, cheese grits and freshly baked biscuits with homemade strawberry jam and fresh squeezed orange juice. The second morning we enjoyed thick sliced French toast topped with fresh berries, a side of pears sautéed with butter, nutmeg and cloves, vegetarian bacon for us (turkey bacon for the others guests), and fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. Because we do not eat meat, Monique specially made vegetarian bacon just for us. There was also an afternoon tea across the way at Monique’s other B&B, The Buttonwood Manor, but we were always too stuffed from breakfast to fit it in. On our second night the staff at the Akwaaba turned down our bed leaving silver-dollar chocolates and a card wishing us a happy babymoon on our pillows. Our room was aglow with candles and the center piece was a bottle of chilled sparkling apple cider and a hearty serving of homemade whipped cream and sweet strawberries. We had the most romantic, stress free vacation of our marriage. It was a truly relaxing experience to stay at the Akwaaba. We feel like we have a home in Cape May whenever we need a break. We highly encourage couples, friends, families (even those with children) to stay at the Akwaab because all we will be welcomed and have a wonderful time. Note: if you are particularly high maintenance and/or supremely royal in your brand of pickiness, then we would discourage you from staying here because the low-key, laid back atmosphere that is the Akwaaba can only be truly enjoyed by those seeking to let go, lay low and relax.
