“Great breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2008

My mother in law and I had breakfast here on 8/25/08. I had the orange almond french toast, and it was fantastic. It had such a nice, fresh orange flavor and the sliced almonds were a nice, crunchy compliment to the soft bread. I also had a side of wonderful, thick sliced, crisp bacon. Perfection!

My mother in law had the country breakfast -- two eggs (she chose scrambled), batter fries, sausage and toast. She ate nearly everything and said it was great, especially the crispy batter fries which were fried with a little bacon.

Service was great, coffee was good, we sat in the back on the terrace. It was very nice. Not too outrageously expensive, much more costly than a diner or an all-you-can-eat place, but the quality was clearly evident and well worth the price.

One disappointment, though. And I hesitate to even comment on it, but it really caused me to take pause. A table of Japanese tourists were dining (it appeared to be two families, a large group) next to us. They asked their waitress what scrapple was, and she very loudly gave a nauseatingly inaccurate description to these poor, horrified diners. I noticed other diners within earshot also stopping to gasp in horror at her comment. I'm hoping that the management will read this and educate their waitstaff that scrapple is not "basically all parts of a pig except the hooves ground up into a loaf." Yuck.

“Best breakfast in Cape May!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2008

The Mad Batter's breakfast is outstanding! I had the batter home fries and the fruit bowl. The fruit bowl was excellent because the fruit was fresh and so beautifully cut. The batter home fries are made the old fashioned way, which is great because their is no peppers that give me heartburn. This is hands down the best place for breakfast.

The only thing is there is a long line to be seated for breakfast. However, the staff is ontop of everything. I guess that when you serve great food, a line is expected.

This is a great place to go for breakfast. If you decide to order pancakes...share them with a friend. The portion size is huge.

“Our Favorite Home away from Home!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2008

If you have not experienced the Mad Batter, you have not experienced EXCELLANTS. We have been dining at the Mad Batter for 19 years. Our favorite vacation spot is Cape May NJ. The highlight of our trip is the Mad Batter. Each visit to the Mad Batter exceeds the last. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Deserts or Cocktails at the fabulous bar are extraordinary. The Mad Batter staff make you feel like a personal guest. The food is is like no other. On our last visit in May, we by-pasted all other resturants and stayed with the Mad Batter. On the down side, we have yet to rid ourselves of the extra pounds gained from the marvelous food and drinks. If you go, please try their chocolate martinis. Thanks to all at the Famous Mad Batter for a wonderful vacation. We cannot wait to see you all again next year. As a post note, we live in Charleston South Carolina and have the enjoyment of fine restuarants and service. The Mad Batter is in a class of their own.

“Crab Cakes - Worthy of praise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2008

We had a party there for 30 people. The service was spot on, friendly and super efficient. You asked for a drink (a house-made, yummy, bloody marry made with pepper stoli) and moments later you had a drink. Never had to ask for water or wine to be opened it, was all done as needed by a very attentive (yet small) staff. Never had to ask for something twice. We had everything from 13 year olds to 83 year olds in our party and everyone of them was handled perfectly. Kids got there finicky needs met and the older folks were seated promptly, properly and served courteously. The STAFF from the kitchen to the wait / bus staff were all great. These were not teenagers on summer jobs that could care less about you , these were seasoned pros that know how to cater an event and how to please everyone.
The food was great and frankly, more than I expected from a "casual" dinning restaurant. They had a table set for appetizers during the cocktail reception (held in the back yard around the koi pond) that included yummy white pizza with portabello and roasted sweet onions that was better than the pizzas at most local pizza joints and chicken satay with a peanut sauce. Both were quite good and easy to eat while conversing and gathering for the party. The food came out hot and there was a steady supply of it. In fact, unlike many places that run short of food quickly when it is so yummy, they kept it coming and we had leftovers. The main courses were limited to a selection (pre-ordered) of three or four items. Standard procedure for large parties. Everyone seemed to have something they liked. I had the crabcakes and I must say they were fabulous, Just enough panko crumbs to form a cake and the rest was crab (I think shallots?) and seasoning. They were HUGE, sweet, perfectly cooked, crisp and not a tiny bit greasy. Served with just a hint of sauce so as not to drown the food. One of the finest crabcakes I have ever eaten from anyplace. Whether it be a first class restaurant in Charleston or a crab-shack on the eastshore of the Chesapeake. These crabcakes win awards for good reason.
All in all I can easily recommend the Mad Batter for events or simply for a meal. They also have a nice happy hour with a full bar.
