We decided to splurge on our weekend getaway to Cape May and dine at the highly rated Peter Shields Inn. The atmosphere is very lovely and the food was excellent . . . everything we expected and were willing to pay for. However, the service was lacking! The entire time we were there, our waiter spent most of his time socializing with the couple at the table across from us -- and we heard every word of their conversation -- which was annoying and made it difficult to converse ourselves. After opening our wine and doing the first pour, he never reappeared to refill our glasses. I had to turn around, grab the wine from the ice bucket and pour it for ourselves until the bottle was finished (three times)! When he finally appeared with dessert menus and we said we would pass on dessert this evening, he all but dismissed us -- turning on his heel and leaving before we even had a chance to ask for coffee. We are not people to complain or be rude to waitstaff so we don't know why he was so inattentive other than the fact that he was more interested in chatting with the couple across from us. What could have been a truly wonderful evening was in fact a huge disappointment due to lack of service. For this reason alone, we rate psi with only three stars.
