“Great stay at the Periwinkle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

My wife and I just stayed that teh Periwinkle for 3 nights - we had a small suite that included a separate bedroom and living room with sofa bed and efficiency kitchen, and a balcony overlooking the courtyard and pool. This set up was ideal and comfortable. The room was very clean, and housekeeping kept it that way all 3 days. Flat screen TV in the living room was nice - we brought a small DVD player to plug in - which worked well. There was an old TV in the bedroom - no remote except the one from the LR worked for just the cable box.

We read warnings that the beds are uncomfortable, so we brought our Queen sized memory foam topper and this was a life saver I think. My wife really needs a comfortable bed.

The location is great -- the hotel is situated at the very beginning of the promenade that runs 1.4 miles along the beach to the jetty end. 10 minute walk to the central business district. There was a beach entrance and beach pass sales booth directly across the street as well - beach access was free since the life guards were gone. Usually $5/day and $10 for a 3-day pass (in season). You could easily walk to restaurants and bars in town, and even next door at other hotels. This location (about 4 blocks from the center) is a bit quieter, but not far from the "action" such as what Cape May has to offer.

The front desk staff were very welcoming and helpful. I had to ask for shampoo and conditioner, which is free upon request. Nice little vials - so they know they would be stuffed into suitcases every day, thus the "by request" policy. Understandable. Ask at check-in though.

Families with young children would love this place. They have a regular pool and a 1 foot deep kiddie pool. Also a big sandbox, playhouse, and toys on the courtyard lawn. The courtyard is very nice -- the place has a french/european look ... a bit more charming than many of the beach front "motels".

Price was good - and we did shop. Booked it through Bookings.com.

We will stay here again.

I've been going down every summer to Cape May, NJ for 27 years now. There are very few properties that compare to the Periwinkle Inn. The rooms are a nice size, clean and most have updated bathrooms. If you ask for extra towels, they are very amenable. The staff are friendly, courteous, and helpful. Since it is located further down the beach from the arcade, it is very quiet and relaxing, which is why we chose it for this particular weekend. The soap is small so we usually bring our own. The property is well kept and there is plenty to do for a small hotel - shuffleboard, a life-size doll house, sandbox and pool as well as across the street from the beach. Relaxtion is key here......

The hotel could have been cleaner and the room could was in need of remodeling at the very least. We had to go to the front desk twice for clean towels and extra small bars of soap. The room had a slight oder and needed new carpeting. I thought the hotel was a bit pricey and not worth the stay. If your going to stay at Periwinkle Inn bring plenty of cold hard cash, thay don't except credit cards or personal checks only CASH. Payment is in CASH only.

Hello and I am so sorry that your stay was not 100% enjoyable here at the Periwinkle Inn. I only wish our guests would tell us when there are problems like this with vacuuming! We certainly would have jumped right on it to send someone else down to your room and vacuum immediately. All guests need to know that we are in the process of renovating our hotel before the 2013 season. We thank you all for your patience!

We look forward to serving you again in the near future!

Sincerely,

Periwinkle Inn

We booked last minute to this Cape May hotel and were influenced by the reviews that mostly used adjectives such as clean and pretty. It's very hard not to notice that the property is truly well maintained and landscaped. The pools are clean and the guests are generally quiet. It kind of went downhill from there. The elevator was quite roomy and clean, and was an unexpected plus in an older building such as this one. However, once we opened the room door, we were daunted by the dirty-looking reddish brown, speckled, and worn-out carpet. The bathroom was clean and it appeared this is where anyimprovement had been done. The wall-to-wall green glass tiles were quite beautiful, and the small toilet looked new. However, there were no hooks on the doors or elsewhere for towels or anything else, and not stall shelving for soap or shampoo. Speaking of soap, once we got those two small, flat bars of hotel-sized soap, we never got anymore for the next 4 days. We called front desk, and after they were done accusing us of leaving the room too late for housekeeping as the reason we didn't have soap, and we rebutted that the housekeeper had come, made the bed, but not vacuumed or left soap, we were told to come down to get some ourselves. Our room was not vacuumed for our entire 4-day stay, and we finally got soap the last night only because we went to get some ourselves. Apart from that, the room was fine and the hotel is across from the beach, so very convenient. We had two beds that were a bit hard and very high pillows. We wouldn't stay here again. At almost $300/night for the weekend nights, we felt customer service and houseekeeping left much to be desired, and the carpet was just disgusting to walk on.

The hotel is clean, a little dated but decent. This was my first time in Cape May and my family and I loved it. The hotel is a little pricey but most of Cape May is anyway. The pool was really nice except the lawn chairs were on the outside of the pool area which was a little strange. I have a 5 year-old and there is no way I could sit outside of the pool area so I had to sit on the ground. The location isn't the best but with a little one, it was nice to be in a quieter area at night and early morning. I do agree with the other reviewer...the beds were not comfortable at all. I have to say that overall, we had a pleasant stay and although I would try another hotel next time (just because that's what we like to do) I would stay there again.

Room Tip: The one bedroom suite is definitely worth the extra money if you have children.

This was the 1st time in Cape May that we stayed in a motel rather than in a B&B, and only because it was last minute booking for Labor Day and nothing else was available. No wonder this hotel was the only one that had vacancies, even during Labor Day. The price was very-very high, no breakfast included, no restaurant on premises either. We payed $1089 for 3 nights in a standard room with 2 queen beds ( by the way, very uncomfortable beds). The hotel has neither the Victorian charm that B&B offers, nor the luxuries that really nice hotels provide ( and there are a bunch of luxury ones right near Periwinkle). If all of this is of no significance for you, if you come to Cape May not for it's ambiance but only for the beach, then this review is not for you, just disregard it. As for me, never again! Not worth the money!

Even though on our second day my wife and I were accused of smoking in a non-smoking room and burning the rug, after a brief conversation with the desk representative the situation was remadeed. We were there for almost two weeks even though we were scheduled to go home after five we just could'nt leave. The staff knew my name after the second day and were always curtious and attentive. I wish I could remember the names of the two younger girls, they just could'nt do enough for us. I handed one of the girls the over twenty thousand dollars to place in the safe while I went to the beach, and even though she knew there was an extremely large amount of money there I had no reservations and every dollar was there upon my return. What else is there to say, even though the Periwinkle was not my first choice as I attempted to make my reservations I will have no second thoughts of staying there again!

p.s. I do not blame them for the misunderstanding about smoking, the way I see it they were watching out for the welfare of the other guests and their property. Who could blame them for that!!

Room Tip: Rooms on the west side give you the best view of the ocean but you must be on the second level or hi...
