“great getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2014

We only had one night for an anniversary celebration and Hotel Macomber was a perfect choice. Affordable and conveniently located, it was comfortable from the moment we entered. The room was perfect and sleep was restful. The staff is friendly and the hotel is clean. We enjoyed the front porch several times and also the sitting room, feeling like we were at a second home. Every guest we met also seemed to be enjoying themselves. I noticed the No Vacancy sign went up and was thankful we had a room. We did travel before the season really went in to full swing but I do not believe that would be a consideration for us. The hotel is quaint and charming and I hope we get to return soon.

Room Tip: our room was on the parking lot side, which was quiet

The Hotel Macomber was just the right place. I had made my reservations months ago, and a friend and I shared the room at the very top "The Osprey's nest'. It was a very large room, light and airy in its decor, very simple, designed in such a way that we could have privacy if we wanted to. The beds were very comfortable, the bathroom, small but adequate with good water pressure ( even at the very top of an old building), and a hair dryer: free internet and great TV reception. The hotel has been recently renovated, and it is obvious that its owners take great care in the upkeep of this historic landmark building. We did not use the restaurant attached to it, as it was not yet open for the season. There are plenty of eating establishments within easy walking distance. The beach is just across the street. The price for the room was perfect. My friend and I loved our stay, and plan to go back the next time we are in Cape May.

I read the bad reviews before making my reservation, and I was leery about what we might find. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms are charming. The walls are thin, however we went before the "summer" season began. Being that it was off season, there were very few guests in the hotel. The hotel was not perfect, but we weren't looking for perfection. We were looking for a romantic get away for our anniversary. The hotel fit the bill. There isn't a front clerk from 9pm-9am, luckily we weren't in need of anything during these hours. If you are looking for a full service five star hotel, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a quaint hotel, with charming rooms and a great location this is it.

They say you can't judge a book by its cover, and we're so glad you decided to make your own decision about us, Pam. While our quirky and historical ambiance might not be everyone's cup of tea, we always do our best to provide the best service to each and every one of our guests. We are so pleased you found the romantic anniversary getaway that you were looking for. Hope to see you next year for another great escape!

Let me first say that this is a beautiful historic building with a wonderful porch in a great location. That being said everything else was awful. The walls were so thin we heard everyone doing everything. Doors slam so hard the floor shakes. The Wi-Fi never works but at least I had the forethought to purchase some magazines from the CVS and we sat on the porch and read (imagine that concept!). The only saving grace is that we were by the shoreline and it was only $109 a night. Thoroughly disgusted and exhausted from lack of sleep and quiet, they should have paid us to stay. what a shame for this land mark, it's disheartening.

We want our guest to enjoy a nice, relaxing, and quiet stay when vacationing with us. I am dismayed this was not the impression we gave you, Jim. By any chance, were you able to discuss the noise level of your neighbors with our front desk? Perhaps we could have found a room in a quieter part of the hotel for you to relocate to. As for the Wi-Fi, our appolgies for the spotty connection. I'll be sure to have someone look into how we can boost its reach so our guests have reliable internet access. Although, I am glad you were able to enjoy some time outside on the porch.

We appreciate your honest feedback and will keep it in mind moving forward. I hope you will consider staying with us again to give us a chance to proved the excellent hospitality I know we are capable of.

This place was deplorable. Walls are paper thin you get no sleep. There is noone attending the desk at night to complain to. We had no curtain, shade or frosted glass on our bathroom window which looked into the shower. When we asked for them to put a shade up we were told that they were supposed to fix it weeks ago but must have forgotten. The woman at the desk got thumb tacks and a curtain out of another room and thumbtacked a curtain up. Said maintenance would be in the next day to fix it.. they did not. Wifi goes down constantly. The entire building is set on either heat or air. It was set on heat and it was 78 degrees outside. When we complained about being hot we were told to open the window...which one was broken and would not stay up. Got no sleep and left at seven am and noone was at the desk to check us out. Wont be back.

We want your stay with us to be as relaxing and carefree as possible. I'm sorry to hear this was not your experience during your vacation to Cape May. I apologize for the lack of privacy in your bathroom. Even though we managed a quick-fix, it is inexcusable for the curtains to have been missing in the first place, and maintenance should have been much more attentive to the problem, not only in the bathroom but with the broken window and heating issue as well. While we aren't the typical 24-7 service hotel, I apologize there was no one immediately available when you needed front desk service. Despite your first impression, I know we are capable of providing a much more high quality standard of hospitality. I hope you will reconsider and give us a second chance to prove what we are capable of.

Best wishes,
Crystal, Owner

The room was very clean, however after spending the night walking around town we returned to find we had no hot water in the shower, from our wlak we were cold and a luke warm shower was not a lot of fun, we checked at the front desk but no one was available to remedy the problem, next morning after 9:00 AM no one was at the frint desk again so we told someone from the cleaning staff, that night the problem was fixed and we enjoyed a nice warm shower as the night was cold again from our walk on the Wildwood boardwalk. Overall we did enjoy our stay.

This is an older hotel, so small rooms and bathrooms should be expected. Walls are pretty thin, and amenities aren't the greatest. There are definitely lots of steps, and parking can be an issue when they are busy. The location is great though, right across from convention hall.
