“Another great trip to East Hill Farm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2011

We returned yesterday from our 4th annual weekend at East Hill Farm- it was wonderful! It was lovely to "unplug" for two days and spend time with our children and extended family enjoying the simple yet thrilling things in life- swimming, feeding animals, playing bingo and ping pong....and of course the delicious meals!! I would recommend East Hill Farm to anyone looking to exhale and enjoy the simple things.

My husband and I stayed one night at East Hill Farm to celebrate our third anniversary. It is more of a family place than a romantic rendezvous, but it was just what we wanted for a fun, relaxing weekend.

A great thing about the Inn is that you can arrive early and leave late to make the most out of one night's stay. We came in the morning and enjoyed lunch and some other activities until our room was ready. Since the next day was a Sunday and not busy, they let us keep our room until noon even though the usual checkout time is 10. That easy-going, accommodating spirit was characteristic of our whole stay.

What originally drew my interest to East Hill Farm was the activities you can participate in right on the premises. Sometimes it's nice to explore while on vacation, but we found it very restful to have some things to do right there, already planned. One was a guided hike by a professor at Brown who taught us some basics about identifying animal tracks in the snow. Another was a contra dance in the evening with live Irish music. (Although we were too full from dinner to feel like dancing, we enjoyed listening as we sat by the fire in the lounge.) I love animals, so I had fun milking a cow and a goat, as well as feeding goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and petting rabbits and a horse. We had the hot tub to ourselves both times we went in. Finally all the little details like a sweet old dog hanging around the lobby, coffee, tea, and cookies always available in the dining room, and games and books to borrow made it feel like you were visiting a good friend.

That hospitality really came through during meals. Meals are included in your stay, and served "family style," which means that although they have dishes planned for each meal, you can eat as much as you want (and apparently, at least for breakfast, order whatever you want even if it's not on the menu for the meal, as we heard another table do). If you're on a budget, it's nice to know up front how much you're going to spend, and then not have to even think about money each time you get an hors d'oeuvre or dessert. My favorite food item of the stay was the warm, sweet wheat bread that came out before dinner, dramatically presented on a cutting board with a knife sticking out the top. It was delicious. Between that and the onion rings, chicken wings, quesadillas, cheese and crackers and more served during the cocktail hour right before dinner, I was barely able to eat the main course. To put it briefly, this is a good place to come if you like to eat!

We found our room (in Trailsend) cozy and tastefully decorated, and loved having a view of Mt. Monadnock right out the window. The mattress was not the most comfortable I have slept in, but then again I am spoiled with a memory foam.

Our stay was $280 for one night, including tax and tip, 3 meals, snacks, and all the activities (ski/snowshoe rentals and sleigh rides are extra).

Having stayed here as a child 25 years ago, I was eager to bring my own family (husband, three kids, brother, sister-in-law) back to rediscover the magic. Living in Texas now, we're pretty deprived of any sort of wintery fun. This was a great place to get our fill!
We had the best of both worlds because the first half of our stay was full of bustle and activity (highlights included candle-dipping and contra dancing for all ages), while during the second half the place completely emptied out and we had lots of quiet time to borrow board games from the office and curl up by the fireplace in front of our room (we were originally in Trails' End, but Sherri at the front desk offered to upgrade us to the Farmhouse for no extra charge, and we loved it!).
The children (ages 5, 7, 10) had a blast feeding the farm animals, collecting eggs, eating homemade donuts by the campfire, swimming indoors, building snowmen, and trying out snowshoes (there wasn't much snow, but we had to try it!) They can't wait to come back next time we travel from Texas to New England!
The adults enjoyed all the fun as well, and appreciated the consistently high level of service from all the staff members we encountered. From the folks in the office (Jennifer, Sherri) to our welcoming tourguide (Nicole, I think?) to our servers (Liz, Felicia, Kelsey) to Hannah who corralled my daughters for an evening boardgame, to the gentleman who helped us find snowshoes, everyone treated us with courtesy and kindness.
Finally, I have to say it was so nice to have all the meals served right there on the premises. No piling in the car to search for a restaurant, plus a real vacation from cooking and cleanup.
I can see why people come here year after year. We hope to return soon!

Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We are happy to have been a part of your winter get-a-way! You are like many of our other guests who return as an adult to find that much of what they remember about the Farm is still the same. So glad you brought your family to experience some of your childhood memories at East Hill Farm. Looking forward to your next visit!

I had very high hopes for our trip to the Inn as I read many great reviews while planning our quick getaway. We have traveled extensively as a family both here in the US and abroad. My husband was away on business and so I took my three small children for a Saturday night stay. It cost me $430.00 to stay 24 hours.

Our kids are all under the age of 8. We scrunched into a room that hardly provided enough space for the queen-sized bed. We slept sideways to fit. We camp quite a bit, so we made do.

The food was very basic. I had my heart set on home cooked meals...not food seemingly bought in bulk. As I understand this a working farm with livestock that is sold off for food. It would have been nice to sample the local produce in our breakfast bacon/sausages/hamburgers/hot dogs. The hot dogs for the lunch buffet were of the same quality as a street vendor's...not exactly health conscious or tasty.

The pools were also very basic and the sandbox/playground area was also dilapidated. The staff was friendly, but no different than anywhere else we have stayed. The kids enjoyed the animal interaction and had a very pleasant time...but they didn't have to pay the bill.

The experience was very average. If the price suited the quality of the accomodation and food, then I would recommend the farm stay to others. However for just over $100.00 a family of five can go to Davis Farmland (Clinton, Mass)and spend the entire day doing similar animal related activities (including a pony ride) and cool off in their new splash area/new playground and have money leftover to stay in a reasonable accomodation and enjoy fresh, healthy food.

Sorry to hear you were disappointed with you recent stay at East Hill Farm.

In reviewing your stay with our staff, it has come to my attention that when you called for your last minute reservation, our front desk staff did voice concern to you regarding the size of the room we had available. We are very fortunate to have been completely booked that night except for the one room you stayed in. I am sure it was a very tight fit for you and your kids.

I also want to let you know that we use as much local seasonal produce in our home cooked meals as is available. We do not grow produce here at the Farm, however, we are fortunate to be able to get produce from our local CSA and other nearby farms. We bake all of our breads, desserts and cookies daily. We raise a limited amount of livestock, but not enough to serve all of our house guests. Our meats are available for guests to purchase and take home.

We hope you will give us a try again in the future.

Traveled with my family to East Hill Farm for a long weekend in April of this year. There were six of us (three generations) and every one of us had a fantastic time. To put the charm of the farm in even more perspective, the weather that weekend was miserable.....cold, rainy, and dreary. We went on one of the farm's special off season weekends.....Step Back in Time, I think it was called.........so there were lots of activities going on at all times, and the staff could not have been friendlier, or more helpful. The food was excellent.........most of it grown on the farm, I would guess. We hated to leave and are already planning our next visit. Many of the other families that we met were there for their 3rd, 4th, or 5th trip. Go. You won't regret it.

Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you enjoyed the Spring Step Back in Time weekend. We hope you will join us for another Step Back in time weekend where you can enjoy old fashioned farm activities including cider press, cheese making, ice fishing and sheep shearing demonstrations. East Hill Farm hosts these weekends three times a year; in the Fall, Winter and Spring. Hope to see you down on the farm again soon!

My family has been returning to "the farm" for almost a decade now!Sometimes we go for two or even three weekends a year. We began coming with our son when he was just a baby. He'll be ten this year and we have three more little ones now. This is by far the most relaxing place to take your children. Our oldest child has special needs and we frequently feel unwanted on vacation... that is never the case here! The hosts are so welcoming , the food is very good and the counselors are great. The cocktail hour is a blast. We stay in the deluxe accomodations, which are very nice. My kids love collecting eggs, feeding the animals, swimming, making ice cream or butter, doing arts and crafts and especially playing BINGO. We'll cherish our memories at the farm for a lifetime. My husband is traveling for work this Mother's Day, so he decided to treat us and my parents to Mother's Day weekend at East Hill Farm.
We can't wait!

When we arrived at the inn this past February, our eleven year old walked into the hideaway and said, "Our home away from home!" And the rest of our family agreed. for the past 4 years, we have been coming here during the fall and winter seasons. It is comfortable without being fancy. The Adams are a kind hearted family and it shows, as their dedicated staff (non-relatives) have worked for them for years. We love being able to park our van, knowing we do not need to travel to find food or entertainment for the children. Everything is right there and it is always enjoyable. We are never rushed through anything and there are always places to sit and relax, have a cup of coffee or tea (with the inn's delicious cookies), at any time. Our greatest comfort at the inn is the atmosphere. We never worry about hearing bad language or questionable activities being offered. It amazes us that each time we go, we experience something new! We never leave without re-booking.
