“Amazingly Sweet Hosts & Great Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Follansbee Inn and had an absolutely wonderful time. Denis & Cat are such sweet innkeepers who really bring a taste of Louisiana to New England. One of the best things about the inn is how close it is to Kezar Lake. It is literally right across the road where you have a private dock, canoes, kayaks, & a great place to lounge. We highly recommend Follansbee Inn to anyone looking to get away to the hills of New Hampshire.

Thank you for your kind review. What attracted us as potential owners to Follansbee was its location that is, as you point out, on Kezar Lake. Many inns "on" lakes are close to lakes, very few are on the lake as is Follansbee. We believe it's our lake front location that makes a stay at Follansbee so magical.

My Wife and two teenage children have just returned from a fantastic trip to the USA,the highpoint of the holiday was the time spent at the Follansbee Inn. We stayed for 2 nights and all wished it could have been more,we spent the day cycling, kayaking and swimming, the water is surprisingly warm. The Inn itself is beautifully decorated and very relaxing,Denis was a great host and I can't recommend it too highly.

David, thank you for your kind words. We certainly enjoyed having your family as guests and hope you return to visit us soon. As you noted, our lake is surprisingly warm. It's ideal for swimming and relaxing, even for a Southerner like myself. And with Blueberry Island as a destination it's a fun lake for canoeing and kayaking. Guests such as your family make it very easy to be a good host. Thanks and all the best.

We had a wonderful 3-night stay at the Follansbee Inn. The room we stayed in was very comfortable and nicely decorated. Breakfast each morning was wonderful, even with our strict dietary needs (gluten, dairy and soy allergies) - the hosts, Dennis and Kat, even made us special eggs and offered gluten-free pancakes and toast, etc.

Our favorite part of our stay was definitely the availability of kayaks and bicycles. We kayaked one day in one-seater kayaks, and the next day in a double kayak. We biked around the lake on a gorgeous 2 mile road trail (after Dennis personally saw to it that our bikes were in good riding shape).

There are also plenty of great place to sit and relax (hammock, bench swings, table/chairs on the porch), and just take in the beautiful surroundings.

The lake is gorgeous, and right across the street from the Inn, and it was the perfect getaway. I highly recommend you stay here if you get the opportunity.

Thank you Rachel F for such kind words. We always do our best to accommodate special dietary needs. As you say, Follansbee Inn--with the complimentary canoes, kayaks, sailboat, and bicycles, not to mention all of the nearby hiking trails, the nearby snow skiing in the winter, the snowshoeing and cross-country skiing outside the front door, and the thousands of miles of snowmobile trails with a trail head across the street--is the perfect active getaway, and thus we gear our marketing towards the active guests. But many guests come here for the peace and quiet, and the opportunity to escape the rat race for a few days, to lie outside by the lake with a nice breeze and beautiful skies, or to go outside at night and see incredible stars usually obscured by city lights, or to just sit an dread by a roaring fire in the winter. So we can be many things to many guests, but mostly we are a place for guests to feel at home while spending a brief moment in paradise.

My wife and I had a great two night stay July 20th to 22nd. The rooms at the Follensbee are nicely decorated and clean, but not overly fancy. Dennis and Kat are wonderful hosts. The Inn has bikes (including a tandem) and canoes, kayaks, a sailboat and other toys are available at the inn's dock on Kezar Lake. Kezar Lake is a very nice size, about 3 miles in circumference: a great size for walking around. Due to a recent heat waive and the lake's size, the lake water was a perfect temperature for swimming, just cool enought to refresh you after a bike ride but not chilly. There is also a state park with hiking trails nearby.

Dennis makes a terriofic breakfast every morning. And the hosts have lots of candy of all descriptions throughout the Inn so you always have a quick snack at hand.

The only "inconvenience" is that there is no dinner served at the inn and there is no restaurant nearby (just sandwiches, ice cream etc.). It's necessary to drive at least 3 miles for a restaurant. Based on the Inn's great breakfast, I'm sure that there would be a lot of takers if Dennis made a dinner each evening.

If you want a place to escape to a quiet New England inn on a lake at a reasonable price, it's hard to beat the Follensbee. We'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: It's usually cool at night for sleeping so so try to get a room with windows that open (not just...

I love what you say, and agree wholeheartedly with your description of Kezar Lake. Until they jump in guests just cannot believe that the lake is such a perfect temperature. And you are so right, our nights are comfortable. We may have one or two weekends per summer where the nights are in the mid 70's and a little bit warm, but even then not too warm for sleeping. Most nights, such as this one (July 29) the nighttime temperature will go down to 59 degrees. Just perfect for sleeping with open windows. But guests from the city are used to requiring air conditioning, so it's not until they are actually here enjoying our nights that they realize air conditioning is superfluous. In other words, as inn owners we must offer rooms with air. Now about that idea of cooking dinners, I wish I had the time. Maybe in the future we'll have the wherewithal to have a staff that allows nighttime meals.

We spent a few nights at the Follansbee Inn recently and couldn't have enjoyed it more. The rooms were more than adequate (not exceptional) but the location and breakfast set it apart. The Inn has a dock with boats of all types (kayaks, canoes, sailboat) and a range of bicycles for all sizes. The water was perfect - you can swim right off the dock or paddle to a nearby sandy beach. We were especially amazed by the wonderful breakfasts - the owners come from Louisiana and the offerings were incredible (biscuits, grits with cheese, ham with red-eye gravy, eggs with Hollandaise). We'll definitely go again.

Thank you for your keen observations and kind words. We agree that Kezar is an exceptional lake. The temperature of Kezar is perfect; even a Southerner like myself finds the lake very comfortable for swimming. And of course boating on the lake and walking/biking around the lake make for a fun, adventurous day. We love to share our lake with such wonderful guests. PS, neck and elbow feel great.

The breakfast at Follansbee Inn is excellent. We had the best breakfast berry pie we've ever eaten. The Inn is clean and the rooms are nice but not overly fancy. No air conditioning on the second floor. The Inn is across a small road from Kezar Lake and guests have access to the lake. There are free bicycles to use which is a very nice amenity -- there is a nice short ride around the lake. The Inn has a lot of family photos etc. in the halls -- slightly odd for an inn. But overall we had a positive experience and would recommend the inn to others.

Room Tip: Get a room with air conditioning if the weather continues to be very hot.

Thank yo for your kind words. The pie you mention was a blueberry-raspberry galette, a guest favorite. The flaky/buttery pastry is irresistible. As for air conditioning, we have now air conditioned all rooms on the third floor. The second floor is a little more tricky, but actually, three rooms on the second floor are air conditioned: Jean, Lora, and Jennifer. We are trying to isolate the different circuits for the outlets in each room to determine if additional rooms can handle a window unit. We are hopeful that at least Mary Alane can be added to the list of rooms that are air conditioned.

I believe every inn takes on its own personality based in large part on the style of the innkeepers. Some are run very business-like, with the innkeepers overseeing a staff of workers handling all operations including guest relations. In our case we handle most every aspect of running Follansbee Inn and we live and work in Follansbee Inn so that this is our home as well as our business. Because it is our home we are guilty of hanging family photos in the hallways and in some rooms. In fact, the rooms are named after family members and loved ones. Our aim is to engender a warm, friendly atmosphere to help us welcome our guests and make them feel comfortable in our home.

Want an idyllic escape where the air is pine-scented, the lake Class A (clean) and quiet, and the inn so attractive and charming? We spent a delightful week at the Follansbee Inn in N. Sutton, NH near New London, NH, just an easy hour from Manchester. The hosts are a gracious, attentive couple from New Orleans. Cat decorated the inn, while Dennis dishes up a gourmet breakfast with a Southern flair. Bikes, kayaks, canoes, and a sailboat are all for the borrowing to tour the scenic, residential Kezar Lake and attractive environs. A sparkling general store, just renovated, serves the community with all sorts of libations, food and news. Great restaurants are within a few miles.

Room Tip: In summer, July and early August, ask for an air-conditioned room. The locals say the area struts i...

Thank you for the kind words, it's truly a gift when we get the chance to spend a week with a guest. The two of you were the idyllic guests. We so enjoyed having you every morning for breakfast, as did the other guests with whom you visited. We hope you can return soon for another week's visit.
