The food and presentation is excellent here. Among the best, if not THE best, in all of Northern New Hampshire. If this out of the way Inn was in a more populated area, with an appropriate sized support staff, this chef would a celebrity chef.
That said, the restaurant is in a limited number of rooms (and charming) B&B Inn; with a small dining room in the chic backwoods area of Northern New Hampshire. A place with a highly talented, standout chef. But he is unprepared to prepare and serve more than a table or two at a concurrent time. Our reservation got messed up--whose fault that was is unknown--and in the end, doesn't really matter. The person at the front reservation desk was rude to us--and disinclined to resolve the matter, even to a repeat customer. All on this, my wife's milestone birthday. In fact, the receptionist was more 'Frozen' toward us than anything back in the kitchen. That is when she was not being accusatory on who was at fault for the reservation mix-up. She was sure it was us, probably lying about a reservation--we were not.
When summoned by us, the owner (Steve) was gracious, helpful, solved the hitch without a hitch. We'll be back alright for I think our 5th time in the last several years, knowing that the food is exceptional. But they are noticeably limited in their ability and inclinations to act as an open to the public (not just room guests) restaurant restaurant.
Be damn careful about a clear confirmed reservation in advance, and in accepting the quirks and limitations of their customer service. And ask for Steve himself if things need his attention. He's a good man.
There is a set Price Fix Menu, with multiple choices for each of the provided four courses, each served like the works of art they are. And close to 100% of which is made by the chef himself at the time, not by a restaurant supplier. Heavenly soups, outstanding custom salads, main dishes with carefully crafted coordinated side courses, with chef baked deserts, even artisanal ice creams made on premises. The man is a hands-on perfectionist.
You will have an absolutely wonderful dinner in the end, one you'll relish and remember. At $60 per person, before tax and tip, it's not inexpensive. But at most 'foodie' places anywhere, you'd likely pay a lot more, and get less in quantity and quality, Especially quality. Go.

Thank you so much for dining with us and sharing your wife’s special birthday. Many have suggested over the years that we add to our kitchen staff so that we could accommodate more diners. We certainly could add more staff and give Executive Chef Val Fortin a corner office but that would change everything. Val has a passion for cooking not administration and guests come to have Val personally cook for them. Most restaurant kitchens are like factories but that is not us. Our kitchen is more like an artist work shop and that is the way we like it.

Contrary to popular opinion reservations have nothing to do with holding tables back for celebrities or snobbery. To us careful reservation management is all about insuring that each guest has Val’s full undivided attention.
We use a very dependable computerized reservation system which makes it very unlikely that we made an error in booking. We do remember the guest calling earlier in the week to inquire if we would be serving on Monday but no reservation was made at that time. Karen, my charming wife and co-owner is never rude. She was doing her job to protect the quality of service for those with reservations. Considering the assertiveness of the guest, Karen was quite diplomatic. While fitting them into the schedule did not affect their service some tables with latter reservation did seat late and we are sorry for that.
When I think of our restaurant I imagine getting lost on the back roads of Provence or Tuscany and discovering that perfect inn and restaurant by chance. We don’t want to be the overly hyped restaurant with a celebrity chef but instead a small discovery that will exceed expectations.
The restaurant is open to both inn guests and the general public by reservation although we recommend booking one of our stylish rooms for maximum enjoyment. For cancellations we kindly request 48 hours notice.
