The area just inland in New Hampshire is a hard one for finding places to stay. All the motels and hotels are either on the Rt. 1 corridor on the coast or further inland at the lakes and mountains. If you're in the Rochester area, your choice is either to drive 15 miles to Rt. 1, or select one of only a few places. For budget motels, Rt. 125 is one of the few choices. It is an old building, but has been cleanly re-modeled recently. The rooms are clean, hot water plentiful and there's cable television. It still has oddities, like very low ceilings and small rooms. Prices are not as low as perhaps they should be - there are cheaper digs 15 miles away on the more competitive Rt 1 corridor - but the place is clean. However, the management is hugely uptight. Here's just part of the registration form: "any charges that you have incurred while staying at this motel will automatically be charged to your credit card ... if any money is owed and not paid to us then we will be forced to call the police and then see you in court so we can collect the money owed." More such nastily-worded rules and regulations are posted in the room itself. There is no coffee or breakfast at all. Seems like it may be run by a very clean but stingy and ill-tempered person. The desk clerk was okay. The guests on a midweek night were quiet and okay, but perhaps they have a lot of welfare guests as towns around here do tend to stick the homeless in motels when there's no other option. I didn't see that on my visit, but why else the menacing signs and forms? It's a tolerable choice if you're stuck in the Rochester area, but certainly not a welcoming establishment.
