“A breath of fresh air....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

Stayed 2 nights at the hotel. What a breath of fresh air after staying in bland boxes. This hotel is renovated to a very high standard.
Everything is spotless, and everything works.
The room was large, airy and comfortable.
Breakfast was adequate.
The staff were all engaging, knowledgable and professional.

My wife and I just returned yesterday from a long weekend with friends in Portsmouth, NH. We stayed at the Hotel Portsmouth based upon online reviews and we are glad we did. We arrived late afternoon and were warmly greeted. I was amazed that Dana at the front desk remembered me from a phone conversation two months prior when I made the reservations. Raya and Elena got us checked in and were spot on with dinner and activity recommendations. Raya even called around town to see if any of the sports bars were going to be showing the NY Mets vs NY Yankees game!! The rooms were really nice, modern and clean. The wifi was free and worked well. The public spaces were inviting and cozy. There was always coffee, tea and water (still and fizzle) available. There was also a simple continental breakfast with home made banana bread - yummy! I will definitely visit Portsmouth again and most certainly stay at the Hotel Portsmouth.

Room Tip: Second or Third Floor

If you come to visit Portsmouth, it is because you want to see and experience the historical significance of this charming town. As such, it would be a shame to stay at one of the nationally flagged hotel chains and miss the more intimate experience of staying at the Hotel Portsmouth. As advertised, it the only independently owned and operated boutique hotel in the historical district, and the owners are rightfully proud of that designation. Although itself a 140 year old historical building, the property has been upgraded and improved with all of the modern conveniences (including the free use of in-suite I-pads), while still embracing the architectural and thematic roots of its beginning as the great house for one of Portsmouth's largest merchants who lived there back in the 1800's.

The property is centrally located, within a 10 minute walking distance of the myriad restaurants and attractions you would want to see in Portsmouth. In addition, the hotel offers a very helpful on-site staff to assist with any special requests or directions for other locations outside of the immediate area. Each morning they offer a complimentary continental breakfast providing a broad selection of tastes, including specialty home-baked breads prepared daily by the owners.

You will not be disappointed should you have the foresight to book this property to highlight your visit to historical Portsmouth, as it's surroundings blend in perfectly with your overall adventure.

We've initially booked one night as a quick stop in our way to Cape Cod but we've liked the hotel and Portsmouth so much that we decided to stay a little longer. What a great hotel. It's a beautiful old building with affordable large well decorated rooms. Great cross between old and new. We've had a separate bath and spacious walk-in shower. Which is a first for me in a U.S. hotel.
Breakfast was great: coffee, different yogurts, fresh fruit and pastries. The hotel offered free parking and the staff was incredibly helpful. They've pointed us to the right restaurants and bars. Everything within a 5 minute walk of the hotel. We've had an amazing stay here. Highly recommend.

From a touch of Bates Motel in the entrance with the " vacancy" sign, til the old fashioned yellow telephone in the room, everything is so cool!!The hotel ,more like a kind of a trendy bed and breakfast,is located in an ancient house.WE booked the king room loft, and it was amazing!!!2 bathrooms,a lot of Windows, great decoration matching the 50`s with century XXI!!A good breakfast was included in the rate!!!Staff extremely nice!!And by the way, within a walking distance from atttractions and good restaurants!!!A lifetime experience!!

Room Tip: LOft is more than perfect!!!

portsmouth is one of our favorite places in the whole wide world, but we saw less of it than usual this trip. all we wanted to do was hang out at hotel portsmouth. everything is perfect. i could sit and read a book in a deep leather chair in one of their comfy, cozy sitting rooms all day long. i could wake up to that lovely little breakfast with good bagels and good coffee every morning. i slept better in that luxurious bed with the white noise from the thoughtfully provided dyson fan than i do at home. heck, i want to live in hotel portsmouth.

every detail is perfect. i am a designer and i found myself taking pictures of every rug, every sofa, every tissue box holder, every water jug, every mason jar, every light fixture... so that i could remember and recreate this perfect vibe for clients. it's traditional meets modern. it's sexy meets comfy. it's casual meets luxe. it's the perfect place in portsmouth.

Perhaps the best testimonial I can think to give is that on a cold, rainy afternoon, my wife, 8-year-old son, and I thoroughly welcomed the opportunity to escape the nastiness and relax in our suite. Don't get me wrong—we thoroughly enjoyed Portsmouth and loved the centrality of the Inn to downtown—but we also so loved the Inn, itself, and were more than content to listen to the rain and spend a leisurely afternoon in comfort.
