“Too. Much. Food. (in a good way)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We were on our way to another TripAdvisor recommended restaurant in Portsmouth, when we walked by The Friendly Toast and decided to try it instead. Sure, the kitschy retro breakfast joint decor lured us in, but the food really makes this place legitimately awesome! The toast (of course) is amazing. One slab is size of one of Moses' tablets. They had jalapeno cheddar the day I visited, and it was spicy and satisfying. Toast is my favorite food.

“True character, True Portsmouth.”

it's not everyday you stumble upon an establishment with as much character, charm, and value as The Friendly Toast. A true gem that can only be justified by visiting yourself!

“Cleanliness over good food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Just left Friendly Toast. I agree with all the reviews about the good food. We had the French toast, potatoes, eggs, cinnamon bread, whole wheat bread. All delicious. However, I was seated at a booth with a view of the kitchen. I watched our waitress slice up bananas and pick them up with her hands, the same hands that handled the menus, paper, pencils, her skirt that she wiped her hands on. Then she put the bananas on someone's waffle. Other waitresses were handling food also There was a waiter who brought water glasses to tables with the glasses sacked on top of each other with his fingers touching the rims of the glasses. The syrup that was set on our table stuck to the table and the pourer was also stuck shut. I had to pry it open. I try not to be a germaphobe but there needs to be some training here. I saw one cook who was wearing gloves. Wait staff should not be handling food and then everything else.

“Great breads, breakfast, and tattoos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

The Toast is a local (and tourist) favorite, maybe more for its punk rock vibe and garage sale decor than its food perhaps, but that isn't to say the food is bad by any measure. They bake the breads in house, and the specialty breads are usually pretty fantastic. Try the anadama toast with a scramble or something else egg-centric. Hard to go wrong with breakfast items. Service is charmingly and predictably spotty. There are better breakfasts in Portsmouth (try Colby's) but this is definitely the most unique and certainly the most memorable if you're just in town for a couple of days.

Great ambiance, food, and service! Try the Salmon Eggs Benedict. And ask for the table with the mermaid!
