Description: Located just two blocks down from Market Square in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Jay's has become an overnight institution among locals who appreciate exceptional seafood. The quality of fare is unsurpassed, with fish arriving daily from local fisherman as well as some exotic catches from locations such as New Zealand and Ecuador. Four to six varieties appear on the ever-changing "Catch of the Day" menu, complimented by your choice of a gourmet sauce or marinade. The standard menu offers a more traditional flavor, including Maine Crab Cake, Haddock Piccata and the popular Linguine in White Clam Sauce. The atmosphere is casually hip, with no pretense. Reservations encouraged. Open Seven nights a week.

“you'll jump for joy at jumpin jays!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is NOT just your run of the mill fresh fish joint; there are lots of those in the harbors towns of the northeast but jumpin jays is special. the menu is very creative, the food is exquisite, and the chefs have a unique ability to introduce wonderful complimentary flavors and sides without detracting at all from the feature of the dish which is of course the excellent fresh fish. i definitely recommend a visit, the rawbar, appetizers and entrees are all top notch. the crab grilled cheese is to die for. Enjoy!!

“Great fish...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

I had a great flounder here, and my wife had lobster tortolini, both well prepared... the apps and drinks were good too.

“Freshest fish, oysters & seafood galore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

Stopped in around 6:30PM on Halloween to find staff dressed in costumes, a neat touch. Ordered nice Belvederte martini for me and a Cosmo for a friend. For dinner I had the pan fried scallops with a mandarin wasabi sauce, which I shouldn't have ordered, as I can't take hot foods. There were plenty of other choices for sauces. The meal was served with mashed red potatoes and asparagus cooked just to crisp, and a little side of sweet potatoes in maple syrup. All excellent.
My dining partner had the haddock piccata and love it; big piece of fish, same sides.
Very perky staff made the evening relaxing. You can dine at the bar if you wish.
Meal and 2 drinks came to about $ 73, so $90 with the tip for the capable servers.
Sorry I don't know about reservations, etc. But do go, you'll like it-

“Off Night?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

I cannot share the enthusiasm of other reviewers about this restaurant which we found to be pretty average at best. We did not have to wait and were seated on arrival. It might have been because it was the night of the first presidential debate.
Service appeared indifferent with a fairly long wait ( wine finished before arrival of main course) .
Food was slopped on the table upon serving..
It tasted O.K. but definately not memorable. Adequate portion sizes.
In a two week vacation with regular meals ( mostly chosen through TA reviews) this easily made the bottom three.
Maybe we should have had the Scallops!

“Best scallops ever tasted!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

I had read a trusted restaurant review on Jumpin' Jay's before traveling to Portsmouth. It was a Sunday when we arrived and did not expect to need a reservation as streets were quiet of tourists by early evening. A local merchant suggested we go and put in a reservation, which we did. Reservations needed; the place was packed by 7 p.m. Two of us had the scallops. Though everything was superb, the scallops were outstanding...truly. Huge, cooked to perfection. Another nice feature is that the menu states where the seafood was caught. Scallops came from Georges Bank.
