This former redlight district has been remade over the past decades into a family destination. I highly recommend visiting the gardens, both the formal enclosed garden with its fountain and brick paths, and also the nearby sunny gardens maintained by Univ of NH. Gardeners will get ideas; photographers will have fun with the variety. Then, there's the summer festival of events - be sure to check out the schedule and go to the current musical. Fun to attend these outside events with a cool salty breeze and under shade trees. Also great views of the rushing harbor waters, tugs, Navy Yard, and other harbor activity. Across the street from Strawberry Banke. Good restaurant options within walking distance. Easy to walk here from downtown Portsmouth (if you have a parking spot, don't try to drive herre and find another!!).
