“Exactly what we needed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

After sitting in traffic for 7 hours, the complimentary beer waiting in the mini fridge was exactly what we needed. Very nice staff. Perfect location. The iPad, iPhone dock and individual coffees in the room were all nice touches.

The Ale House was one of the best boutique hotels I've stayed in recently. The staff was so friendly and helpful & the room was incredibly clean. It's in the best location and we even borrowed their bikes to explore. Highly recommend doing a bar tour or a food tour of the town. Wonderful and romantic trip, can't wait to revisit.

This is our new go to place in Portsmouth. The urban loft warehouse décor does not extend to the rooms, which is too bad. But the rooms are tasteful, fresh and clean. No views, but the windows actually open for those who like fresh air. Good, quiet AC for summer. Excellent location in the city.

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights. The front entry room has a lot of charm and the nice fireplace. The rooms themselves are on the small side, white, and not the same type of decor present in the nice front entry room. However they did feel very clean, comfortable, and modern.

We didn't really like the iPad and would have preferred that there was an open WiFi network so that we could use our iPhones, since we didn't have a US network provider (I know, minor details...).

The girl at the front desk was extremely nice and accommodating and went out of her way more than once to ensure our stay was a good one.

Location was excellent for walking all around Portsmouth. Parking was very good too - right across the street and free right in the middle of the town.

This Inn was exactly what I hoped for in Portsmouth. I was traveling alone for 1 night, but I really wish I could have stayed longer.

The Ale House is very central. Portsmouth is a small town but it is always good to be central. The Ale House was a short walk to the main street where restaurants, shops and the brewery are. So location was excellent.

The room was lovely. It was perfect for me. Modern, stylish and they even have ipads that have restaurant, things to do information already on them to make planning your days and nights that much easier.

Check in was great. Scott was awesome, and continued to be for the entire stay. What an awesome guy! You get local brewed beer on arrival too.

All in all, this is a wonderful place to stay in Portsmouth with character and style. I can't wait to be back!

Agree with some of the other reviews -- it was ok but nothing special, price seemed high. At about 9 PM we had someone knocking on our door, they had received an email that our room was theirs. No staff was available but after the other guests made several calls they were told that management had decided to move the guests to another room. All very strange.

Modern clean smallish room and bath looking out on roofs and other people's a.c./heating units. Central location but there's not much to Portsmouth, could be anyplace.

This was our first trip to Portsmouth and I'm so happy we were able to stay here for 3 nights. I wished we could have stayed longer, but they were booked (not their fault!). The Inn is in the perfect location and has free parking right across the street. We stayed at one of the large chain hotels in Portsmouth and we were charged $18 a day for parking, so we missed our free parking at the Ale House. The Inn is beautiful and the rooms are wonderful. Updated, modern amenities and the most comfortable bed and pillows. The coffeemaker in the room was very nice and we appreciated the basket that was in the lobby with fruit and snacks available 24 hours. The staff is very friendly and helpful and gave ideas where to go and eat. Will definitely return! Thank you for a wonderful time!
