My wife and I had lunch at the Kitchen in Soptember 2012, and fhe following is my opinion based on my experience there. We had been wanting to try the food for a while. The Kitchen is located on Islington Street in Portsmouth, and occupies the space that for years was Celebrity Sandwich. Parking may be found on Islington and a side street. The Kitchen promotes itself as a great sandwhich place in the line of the Food Truck shows on tv.
Upon entering, the Kitchen has a small bar to the left, the counter where you order directly across from the entrance across the back wall, chairs with tables (perhaps 8) inside the storefront, and a small fenced-in patio to the right. The Kitchen is tastefully decorated in a homey, yet upscale feel, if that makes sense.
You order at the counter, which has a large blackboard with the menu, pay there, you give your name, and your name is called when your food is ready.
The menu describes interestng, flavorful sandwiches. My wife choose the Cuban, described as
roasted pulled boston butt, cuban bbq sauce, cole slaw, portuguese chorico, with swiss for $8.00. I chose the Ba Minh, having pate, pulled pork, pickled carrot, cilantro, lime mayo, onion crisps and pork rinds for $8.00. We chose water your pour from a pitcher. The two sandwiches and a small bag of chips came to $20.00,
The sandwiches were smallish, and served with a small portion of coleslaw, although attractively presented. I could not taste many of the ingredients listed for my Ba Minh sandwich. I could not taste a lime flavor in the mayo nor any cilantro. The sandwich to me, tasted most prominenty like a pate-salad sandwich. My wife is a fan of Cuban's and thought it be not amoung the better ones that she has had. I had a bite of hers, and I agreed that it was not one of the better Cuban's that I have had either.
Maybe my expectations of the Kitchen were too high. But I feel that given the menu descriptions, and the flavor, size and prices of the sandwiches, I was disappointed. I expect a more flavorful and larger portion sandwich for $8.00, where there is no table side service.
We will probably try the Kitchen again, but it will not be for a while. I think the food sandwich truck concept in a restaurant is a good one, and I will hope that the Kitchen improves on it's concept and has success.
