“Nice hotel, great amenities, but outdated rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

Overall, a really nice hotel. Centrally located, with a nice open lobby, easy (but costly) parking across the street or with valet, and a comfortable bed. The room itself however was poorly lit, especially in the bathroom and seemed old. But to make up for it, they give you Starbucks coffee with real creamer, free easy to access wifi in the room, fluffy blankets and pillows, a hairdryer and iron, and large flatscreen television.

They give you the option of "going green" when you get there, meaning to forego room service, (for which they give you a $5 food/beverage voucher) but when we got to the room for the first time, the air conditioner was on full blast, the room was chilly, and presumably no one had been in it for hours. So much for being green.

My boyfriend also ordered berries and some other things to the room for my birthday, but they never came. We were full from dinner and drinking around town, so we never inquired about the absence.

We stayed at the Harborside for one night in order to be able to enjoy the Portsmouth 4th of July fireworks. The rate was reasonable, the staff was quite friendly and helpful. Our room was very nice and included breakfast in the morning. This hotel is very well located, easy access to everything in downtown Portsmouth.

We stayed in Portsmouth for a night and was very glad we did. We didn't stay in the main hotel but the 2 story townhouses on the property. The room was huge! The room was a little out dated but the bed was so comfortable. The hotel staff was great! We ate lunch at Surf which was recommended by the hotel. It was pricey but good. We walked to Prescott Park which was beautiful. The Portsmouth Brewery was a great place to get some locally brewed beer and friendly wait staff. Most stores close down by 6:00pm but worth a stop on the way to Maine.

...honestly was a bit disappointed. The lobby is beautiful and the location is good. Staff is very nice. But my room was only ok. I did not find the bed to be very comfortable at all; others have written about the nice bed, maybe my room didn't get one yet, mattress seemed old. The room and bathroom also had paint chips/scuffs around. Not a big deal I realize, but when Im paying this much, I'd expect a nicer condition. The valet parking was quite expensive. Overall it was fine, but I think I'll stay elsewhere next time I visit Portsmouth.

We visit this hotel often, as it is only a little over an hour from our home but we feel like we are "getting away". Portsmouth is a great New England seaside town, with a lot of history, and a lot of great shopping & restaurants! It's not a beach town, but if you need beaches you can probably find some nearby.
The hotel is great, clean, and great customer service. They host a lot of weddings, but we have never had an experience of excessive partying or noise near our room.
On a recent visit I left an item that I had purchased in town in my room upon checkout. I called the hotel the next day, fearing that it was gone forever, but after a couple of days I called back and they had found it, and dropped it in the mail to me. Always nice to have that level of trust in your home away from home!
They also have some great, unique rooms (called "Ports of Call" suites), which if you are looking for something special are very nice. Those are much more like an upscale inn than a hotel. I believe that they are privately owned as they are accessible by a private elevator...but some have balconies and views of the harbor (although keep in mind, it's a "working" harbor and the hotel is not directly on the water).
There can often be large container ships docked across the street, but we find those interesting to watch and I've never had them be too loud.
One downside--the parking is expensive. In front of the hotel and in the garage is all valet @ %18 per night. The self-parking is across the street @ $15 per night. But you can walk to almost everything when staying there.

Room Tip: Club level is always recommended

The Sheraton is ideally situated in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, with a less than five minute walk until you get to either the river and its scenic views, the cute shops or the abundance of quality fish restaurants/bistros and bars. The hotel itself was perfect for the conference I attended, with clean, spacious rooms on the Club floor and all the ammenities a business traveller could want. Parking across the street is ample and the staff were very friendly and helpful with advice on the local area.

Staff was great! They made us feel very welcome and couldn't do enough for us. The hotel lobby was attractive and comfortable with plenty of casual seating. We were there for a conference and all of the meals (most served buffet style in the banquet halls) were very good. Our main dinner (not buffet style) was filet mignon and scallops and was excellent. Our room was nice and clean and room service was right on time with our coffee in the morning. We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Our room faced the hotel entrance where there was a lot of sun in the morning and shady in the after...
