Paula and Bill, owners of the inn went out of there way to make sure that our stay was positive. The rooms and inn are very clean. Lots of hot water in the shower...Yay! Breakfast made by Paula and served by Jim were delicious and perfect, as week as late afternoon homemade goodies and tea. Bill was very helpful in guiding us to sites to see with directions. The grounds are beautiful. Overall, I highly recommend this lovely inn

Our recent stay at The Buttonwood Inn was, in a word, perfect. The Inn itself is in a peaceful, tranquil and thoroughly delightful location...near enough the main access route for the White Mountains but far enough off the beaten path to be restful and relaxing. The property is picture perfect and our room was, by far, the nicest room I have ever stayed in (and I have stayed in a lot of places). Our hosts were welcoming and Bill was more than willing to share his extensive knowledge of both the Inn and the surrounding area. Paula is a truly gifted chef and the breakfasts were delicious and just what we needed to get a head start on the day. If you are looking for a romantic retreat or just a great home base for a trip to the White Mountains, I would recommend this lovely and charming Inn.

Room Tip: Ask for Room 10 - it has a sitting area, gas fireplace, a huge whirlpool tub and it's own entran...

We stayed with Bill and Paula at their immaculate inn on the outskirts of North Conway. My first time, my spouse's second. The welcome was warm and inviting. The room was well appointed and had everything we needed, including a pitcher of cool spring water. We enjoyed afternoon tea on the porch and were entertained by visiting hummingbirds. Breakfast was a superb souffle. Bill and Paula have created an oasis on the slope of Mount Surprise that is quiet, relaxing and restful. One of the best ever stays in the Whites.

Room Tip: Make sure that you are there for afternoon tea and Paula's delicious treats. Bill can help you p...

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at the Buttonwood Inn on Mt. Surprise. Unlike many B&Bs in the area that are right on a main road, this clean and comfortable inn is just far enough from the commotion of town to be a tranquil retreat, yet close enough to Jackson and North Conway to be convenient. The best part of the stay for us was getting to meet Bill and Paula. Paula is an amazing cook-- her breakfasts and afternoon treats were delicious! Bill is a phenomenal travel guide, suggesting hikes and attractions that we would have driven right by. Next time our travels take us to the White Mountain area, we will definitely be staying at the Buttonwood Inn!

We debated whether to go with the usual hotel route for our White Mountain vacation, or whether to go with the more personal bed and breakfast-both of course have pros and cons.
We have stayed in both any tines, but this was absolutely the best place EVER. And a "tree-hugger's" dream!
Bill and Paula, the innkeepers are warm and friendly, give you the privacy that you need, yet are always available for information you need about the area, recommendations for good places to eat and attractions to visit.
They have i depth knowledge of the area they call home, and you can see the pride they take in their Inn in everything they do.
Paula is a trained chef and every day there is a made-from-scratch gourmet breakfast. Even the maple syrup is tapped from their own trees. We stayed 6 days and never had the same thing twice.
Paula cooks her heart out and Bill does the serving and "shmoozing" during that time.
Every evening there are fresh-from-scratch baked cookies and refreshments.
All day, every day, there are really good protein bars and snacks left out for the guests which we made good use of on the days we were out hiking or somewhere we may not be able to eat a meal.
The feeling you get is that you are with gracious friends who allow you to stay in their beautiful home. The inn is an old ( but beautifully restored) expansive farmhouse. There is also a pool, a jacuzzi, and lots of sitting/relaxing areas all over the grounds.
Inside, there is a living room or a "piano room" with cushy chairs and couches. Downstairs there is a huge finished basement of sorts-again, warm and cozy, with a fireplace. They have a huge collection of DVDs for your free use and a computer with free Wi-Fi( the Wi-fi is spotty in the area). In this same room there is a fridge big enough to hold whatever guests have brought or leftovers, etc.plus cups , ice, various glasses, plates and dinnerware. And a microwave.
The rooms are lovely, all individually decorated with views that just make you happy when you look out the window, all with central heat, air, ceiling fans and windows that open for the nice days when you do not need the a/c but would like a nice breeze. I believe there are 10 rooms and 1 is handicapped accessible. Paula and Bill live in the house, in a separate area.
The area is secluded, surrounded by woods, 2 miles off the main road and North Conway Village, and the doors are always open!
The grounds are extensive and beautifully landscaped and there are woods and hiking paths behind the property that are lovely, if you don't feel like going anywhere but are up for a bit of exercise.
If you decide to just hang out on the porch, they have bird feeders hung all over and you may need to duck the adorable hummingbirds buzzing over your head ( in summer)!
Nearby the opportunities for fun, shopping and experiencing nature in its most wondrous are endless.
Extra plus: Paula and Bill have won awards for their commitment to the environment, they minimize use of paper or plastic and encourage guests to do the same. You get a nice carafe of fresh well water in your room every day with reusable glasses.
Plenty of shopping in the nearby village-be sure and hit up Zeb's-the general store-"you name it, they got it!"
Now, 2 minor inconveniences but not a deal breaker by any means:The first is no fault of Bill and Paula-most of the the bathrooms ( not all, I think) are detached, not in your room. HOWEVER, they are pretty much adjacent to your room and private, each with its own key. We were concerned about that, havig to leave the room to go to the bathroom, but it proved not to be an issue. After a bit, we only locked it sometimes as the clientele who stay there are pretty classy and really, who is going to steal my used toothbrush?
The 2nd is that we wished there was more access to hot coffee during the day or at least morning and evening. But then we are coffee addicts so it helped us break our habit and if we absolutely needed a "fix" there are a couple of good ol' Dunkin Donuts drive thrus very close by.
We loved te Buttonwood so much and we actually made friends with another couple. We also felt sad to leave Bill and Paula, as we had come to feel like they were family.
We will definitely return for another wonderful stay at this exemplary B and B!!

Room Tip: We had a king bed, very comfy ( Room 5), nice views. Room 5 can open into Room 4 if you are with fri...

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our room was lovely and very quiet. There is a LOT to do in the area. The breakfasts in the morning were fantastic. Remember to bring your swimsuit for the pool which was a pleasant surprise. A really great place to stay

Stayed for two nights on a couple of beautiful mid-week days in August -- overall our experience was superb. The innkeepers get both the big and little things right, and accommodations compare favorably with some more expensive options in the vicinity where we've also stayed (I'm looking at you, Inn at Thorn Hill!)

The only minor drawback is that in some of the traditional rooms, the private bathroom is around the corner (note that I think in some of the more expensive rooms, that's not the case). This wasn't really an issue for us, as both the bathroom and the room itself were very nice, and there wasn't much hall traffic since the inn wasn't full. We're hoping to come back.

Pros:
-Very comfortable.
-Excellent, filling breakfast, with variety from day-to-day.
-Location. (Special bonus: relatively unusued hiking trail behind the inn leads up Mount Surprise)
-Hot tub!

Cons:
-North Conway & White Mountain trails both have a lot of traffic in peak season. Can't really blame the inn for that, though.
