“Bring your ear plugs, pillows, and mattress”

The Stonehurst Manor

Apr 30, 2008

I'm horribly confused by the reviews here.

I followed tripadvisors reviews and chose Stonehurst as a gift for my boyfriend. I was eager to stay somewhere where we could bring our dog. There were a few other hotels I could've chosen, but I chose Stonehurst based on the reviews. I'm wondering if perhaps people who are reviewing are doing so for the main inn and not the back motel-like rooms for pet owners? We stayed in the pet section.

We are pretty low maintenance when it comes to travel and we've stayed in a lot of different kinds of places, including motels. We were told on the phone that the section of Stonehurst that allows pets is motel-like. We were fine with that. We just wanted a clean quite place to sleep, with our dog in the room with us.

The rooms appearance seemed ok initially, although their were a few small rips in the bedspread. It smelled of mildew. I figured they couldn't help that much, with all the moisture in the area- they probably have melted snow coming up through the floors a bit. Common in New England when all that snow melts. It wasn't horribly strong, just noticable. If you have a mildew
allergy or are sensitive, you will not be comfortable with the smell. We had a hard time watching tv because the tv stand set the tv lower than the bed, so you couldn't lay on the bed and change channels. It would have been quite easy for them to put the tv on the dresser, so that one could actually watch it. Again,
no big deal, we weren't there to watch tv, but it was a little annoying.

What was horrible was the fact that I could here every blessed thing my neighbors said, and everything they watched on tv. It wasn't just a "little' noise, it was a lot, from both sides. There must be ZERO insulation in the walls. The bed was by far the worst I have ever slept on- like sleeping on lumpy oatmeal. The pillows were extremely hard- I can usually sleep on any kind
of pillow but these were unbelievably bad. My guess is, they take the "old stuff" from the nicer rooms and put it in the "motel" section when it is no longer nice enough for the inn. Giant drips of water fell from above our door all night, and huge patches of ice formed outside our door and I almost fell taking the dog out. Other people also had dogs and they were not cleaning up after them.. and the inn wasn't, either. Very unpleasant. The dog walk was not plowed out, and behind it was a trash area full of broken furniture. Our dog was trying to get to something from under the bed- it was a can of hairspray that someone must have
left, so I guess they don't clean under the beds. Hope they clean the actual bed.

I was at least hopeful for the food. After all, it's supposed to be
award-winning, and everyone raves about it. I was excited when our soup came- it was FANTASTIC. Our entrees were disappointing. We both ordered tenderloin. Both orders were overcooked, and the meat was not pan roasted. It was basically what you get at a wedding if you order the beef. I was really bummed out about that, as I had heard the food was so great.
The dining room was quaint but the water stains on the ceiling were pretty unattractive. They could have easily closed that section of the dining room, as there were other sections that were cozy and not water stained and dreary.

The inn itself is really very nice. there is a huge fireplace in the
lobby area, and a sweet and beautifully groomed white cat that greets you when you walk in. The inn itself has a lot of charm , and perhaps the rooms in the inn are better, but I highly recommend you NOT stay in the rooms behind the inn that allow pets, unless you bring ear plugs, your own pillows, and perhaps your own mattress...and don't order the fillet unless you enjoy overcooked wedding food. Breakfast was better, but not much over average. Basic breakfast fare, but it was plentiful.

I paid about $170 for one night, midweek accommodations for 2 plus dog, with dinner and breakfast, for a really bad motel room and mediocre food.

"My husband and I love staying at Stonehurst Manor. Everyone is very kind and professional. We have stayed in several rooms in the Manor (our favorite is Room #20), and have never been disappointed. In the winter we really love having a room in the manor with a fireplace. Nothing like having quite time in front a beautiful fire! In the summer we enjoy staying in the wing on the upper level, as we love sitting on the deck and looking out at the mountains. Watching the sun set behind the beautiful White Mountains is an awesome site to see.

We also enjoy spending time in the front room of the manor, which doubles as a lounge, for one of their specialty drinks before dinner. The food is outstanding! My favorite is the short ribs and my husbands in the meatloaf. Don't plan on loosing any weight while you are there!!

We look forward to spending a week at the Manor in July. You can not go wrong booking your time away at Stonehurst Manor. We have had the privilege of meeting, and making friends with some terrific people while visiting the manor.

As I said in the subject line...we love, love, love Stonehurst Manor!!"

First let me start by saying we have been coming to the Stonehurst Manor for the last 8 years and we try to make it twice a year. We have renewed our wedding vows here, which was the most beautiful time. We just spent our first Christmas here and they made us feel like family, it was truly a magical Christmas. We are even going to celebrate my 40th b-day here this year. This is the only place we stay when coming to North Conway.

We have a few favorite rooms in the Manor which are 20, 22, and 23 they all have fireplaces and Jacuzzi's and are all very roomy and spacious.

We think the meals here are the best in the area. Breakfast is always a pleasant experience especially in the summer when the windows are all open in the big dining room and you can here the birds and smell the fresh mountain air. My husband suggest having the blueberry pancakes as he never strays from them. Having dinner at the Stonehurst is an awesome experience, you have to try the Prime Rib which just melts in your mouth. Also the Baked Haddock with Lobster Cream Sauce is out of this world. Besides how many places can you go these days and get your room and your meals included in one price.

We love the lounge where we have been known to be called the Manor Alcoholics from time to time. There drink menu is unbelievable and there bartenders are very knowledgable.
May I suggest the "Ecstasy Martini". Heather the head bartender was ranked #1 in North Conway and makes a excellent drink.

Theres always plenty to do in downtown North Conway. There are lots of stores to go shopping in along with a few pubs to go have a quick bite before heading back to the Manor for a great time.

The Stonehurst Manor is an excellent place to stay when traveling to North Conway, NH! My boyfriend and I just got back yesterday. We stayed in room # 20 and couldn't have been more pleased with the Manor! The staff was extremely nice and attentive! The room was great with a nice jacuzzi tub, big fireplace, and large comfy king size bed. We had a slight problem with our tv during our stay, and were offered another extremely large room to stay in, but my boyfriend ended up fixing it. They were very helpful and kind. Our dinner was absolutely wonderful! We shared the Lobster Beggars Purse (DELICIOUS!) and I had a caesar salad - boyfriend had a clam chowder - both delicious. For dinner I had the Beef Tenderloin and my boyfriend had the Prime Rib - both amazing!! For desert we split the Chocolate Bomb cake! Everything was great! For breakfast, we were the first ones there and it was quiet and peaceful. I had the Banana Bread French Toast and my boyfriend had the Eggs Benedict - both absolutely fantastic! Overall, we were so impressed with Stonehurst Manor and will definitely be staying there again. It is located in a great area and was very accomodating! The dining room staff and regular staff were wonderful and everything was great! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND it to all couples - we are 19 and 23 and were treated wonderfully so I can imagine that older couples would be treated wonderfully too!
