The first thing we noticed when we arrived at Eastern Inns is that there was no one to help us with luggage. I was travelling with my mother and 2 year-old. We could have used a hand, espcially since we were put on the second floor, which had no elevator access. The second thing we noticed is the distinct smell of cigarette smoke, despite the fact that there were "No smoking" signs on every available surface. A smoking area was designated right below the window of our room (just in case we missed the smell once out of the corridor). The pool (Heated! the sign proclaimed) was cold, and had an odd pebbled surface surrounding it-- perhaps to discourage running? It also discouraged walking. Speaking of pebbles, the little play area was surrounded by stones. Not the best landing surface for little ones. Eastern Inns is, however, conveniently located near the big and delightful playground in North Conway. A continental breakfast was served in a dark rather depressing basement. The clearly marked "staff only area" was vacant, but interestingly filled more than half the basement. The staff area also boasted a TV that was on-- not that anyone was watching or anything. Breakfast was good if you like things made with white flour, such as bagles, English muffins, and bread. It also included a bowl of apples and two brands of cereal The somewhat cramped rooms were clean and the sheets were soft. If you hope for more than that when you're on vacation, try elsewhere.
