Since the Asia restaurant up the road shut down a couple of months ago we have been looking for a good Chinese buffet with easy parking and access in the area. One of my friends in Dover suggested the Great Buffet. We took a 91-year-old relative there. She was quite delighted with all the selections—a welcome change from the repetitive fare she gets at her assisted living center. She tried the pizza, the salmon, and several other dishes. One person in our party tried the sushi; the raw fish was fresh and tasty, and there were several types of salmon, tuna, shrimp, avocado, rolls. Seaweed salad was also available. We all sampled the Chinese food, and the lobster claws. We did not try the Hibachi grill.
The fried rice was moist, not dry and crisp. The lobster claws, unfortunately, had dried out under the heating lamps, so the meat was stuck to the insides of the shells. It was very dry and had lost its taste. The spare ribs were good, meaty, and not too greasy. The egg rolls were a bit bland. The chicken and beef dishes were good. The teriyaki chicken was OK. One selection offered was faux crab wrapped in bacon. We saw dozens of items at this buffet we had never seen before, such as frog’s legs and crawfish. Staff members were stirring the dishes on the heat table, but some items were only lukewarm, indicating they may have been sitting for a while.
Our server was extremely eager and solicitous, but she did not have a good command of English. Two people ordered Bourbon Manhattans on the rocks. We had to point out the drink on the list to our server, spell out B-o-u-r-b-o-n, and explain to her what “on the rocks” meant. I just ordered their $1.99 beer special to avoid any confusion. The Manhattans arrived straight up in chilled glasses, not on the rocks as ordered. They were pronounced OK. Other than that, our dishes were cleared promptly and all other tasks, including taking payment for the check, were done promptly.
This is not a gourmet experience. But we will return and try other items and the Hibachi grill.
