“Best Hotel Near Portsmouth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

This is by far, hands down, the best hotel you're going to find near Portsmouth, NH. Even in the dead of winter, it was everything we could ask for and then some. When you stay here, you're not really close to town, per se, but you don't need to be! The restaurant, Salt, is fantastic, and when the breakfast buffet is running (it will be if the hotel has a certain occupancy rate), it's an excellent value. Otherwise regular breakfast was also a real treat.

If you're looking for a gym, this one is above normal hotel standards, and the spa is excellent. I can't wait to go back when it is warmer and take full advantage of the amazing facilities!

Room Tip: Some rooms had heated floors in the bathroom that were controllable. I'm pretty sure mine did no...

We were very disappointed since we were looking forward to what we thought was going to be a relaxing vacation. It was obvious when we arrived that yes there are boats and water but it is just a view. Our room, quite expensive, was overlooking the back parking lot and dumpster. I could not get a spa appointment and we had the feeling that we were outsiders at an exclusive country club. The wait staff was so intrusive with the million questions and much too phony friendly affect. The only saving grace was the doorman who was genuinely helpful.

Room Tip: Important to ask for a front room otherwise overlooking dumpster

Thank you Joan for sharing your comments about the Wentworth by the Sea Hotel. We try our best to provide a unique experience to all of our guests and it appears we were unable to exceed your expectations. As we are on an island, all of our rooms do have a view of the water although some rooms can be more desirable. I apologize if your room was not to your liking. I also understand your frustration with spa bookings. We do try to keep appointments available to hotel guests, although we are know as one of the best spas in the area and locals often visit for that reason. Lastly, the staff in the restaurant should in no way make a guest feel uncomfortable. I will pass your comments on to the dining room manager to ensure a friendly atmosphere in SALT. I know I cannot change how you feel about your previous stay, but I would love to host you again in the future. I would be happy to offer personal assistance with reservations to give you that unique Wentworth experience that we are known for. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further comments or questions. I look forward to speaking with you soon!

Best regards,

Trevor Cross

I have mixed feelings about the Wentworth. A 2.5 or fair rating is where I would put it considering the price. The hotel and staff were nice. The service and food at Salt was very good. The room itself wasn't very good. Cramped, bare walls, very few and tired appointments. I've stayed in nicer rooms elsewhere for far less money. Between the banging heat and the bustle from the housekeeping station next door starting at 6AM, sleep wasn't very good. I have to agree with another reviewer, maybe booking a spa package gets you the less desirable rooms. I'd recommend visiting just to eat or to check out the hotel.

Everything we do is aimed at providing you with an excellent hotel experience and your feedback is extremely valuable. Our rooms do have a certain old-world charm to them, however we often receive positive feedback on the décor. We do have room renovations on our radar within the next year to update the entire look of the hotel interior. I can also assure you that in no way does booking a package have any relation to room assignments. We truly appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us so that we may continue to deliver exceptional service in the future. Should you wish to return, I would be more than happy to offer personal assistance with reservations and see to it that you are in a room to your liking. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly for future inquiries.

Sincerely,

My wife and I were greatly impressed with our stay at the Wentworth. We have been here 5 or 6 times but never in the winter - so glad we chose to come here to celebrate my wife's "special birthday".

This is a feel good place from the moment you enter the hotel - smiles all around. Ilene McFarland checked us in and was aware that I had called Allison, Front Desk Manager, a few days before to request a nice room for this occasion - we were not disappointed.

Wow, Wow, Wow! My wife was blown away when we opened the door to our Marina suite and you can imagine how good that made me feel. It was sumptuous, complete with beautiful furnishings, a kitchen and dining area to entertain guests, a gas fireplace, and an amazing water view. A separate bedroom and stunning bathroom was located on another level.

We did not stop for breakfast and were famished after our drive from Massachusetts so we decided to have lunch at Salt Restaurant. We were told that this restaurant was renovated last June - the look and feel is exquisite. Our waitress extended a nice warm welcome and we enjoyed a delicious lobster roll while listening to a guest play the piano.

After lunch my wife went to the Spa and I stopped by the restaurant to speak with Dean Pratt, Restaurant Manager. Dean was a huge help in arranging a private dinner to accommodate our family of ten in the wine room for our surprise birthday celebration. The food and wine that night was absolutely delicious and service was over the top. Dean, you really made this very special for my wife - thank you!

We enjoyed a fabulous brunch in the morning and our waitress, Susan Baker, provided exceptional service. Thank you also to Trevor Cross, Front Desk Staff, for his great service.

Inside and out, this place is like eye candy - very enjoyable on so many levels and the service really stands out! Can't wait to come back in the warm weather to enjoy the outdoor pool and beautiful scenery.

Room Tip: You really can't go wrong with any room but if you want an awesome water view we would highly re...

This was planned as a Valentine's getaway for two overworked medical professionals. As reward club members we frequent Marriott locals across the country. This location once we actually found it thanks to detours and no well marked alternate route wasn't even close to what we have come to expect.
The room is spacious and the view magnificent but the heat cannot be adjusted lower than 68 degrees and the mattress is like ten miles of bad road - lumpy, uneven and unpredictable. The tub doesn't drain and the "complimentary" hair dryer barely works and only on one heat setting.
The restaurant does you a favor by accepting reservations - at least that is how it seems. Once they do seat you the delay in service is lengthy, despite many empty tables. The "special" menu for V Day was not of interest to us (too limited) and when we asked for alternate menus the delay became worse and the wait staff appeared inconvenienced by our presence.
Sadly, will not return nor recommend to our family or professional colleagues

We recently stayed at the Wentworth for the Wine festival.... a night of wine and food pairings. We booked a Turret Suite, which consisted of a beautiful King bed and bath with a large walk in shower and a spiral staircase which led to a second floor that had a TV and two large couches in it. Being there with another couple, this provided us a place to sit, sip wine and watch some Olympics before the wine dinner started.

From other reviews, folks complained about the spiral staircase...
Yes, the staircase shook and bounced as we climbed it, but I'm sure the hotel would not have an unsafe staircase for their guests.

After the wine event, we stopped by Salt, their bar and restaurant for a few drinks. It is fabulous. Leather couches, chair, bar stools, beautiful decor and very attentive bar tenders. It's quite large with all sorts of seating arrangements to relax on. They even have a pizza oven.

We'll be back to stay over again and eat at Salt.

A group of eight of us very much enjoyed "Winter Wine Festival" A big tasting event on 2/7. This event was setup so everyone could easily enjoy all the wine and the food. The wine was provided by local distributors that had knowledge and history of each of the wine offering. The food was provided by the in-house Salt restaurant staff. Jazz band played in the back ground. One local vendor/table offered cheeses from their farm in Westbrook, ME (very good stuff). Since they limited the number of tickets sold, it was a perfect setup. The wine and food was never in short supply all the way to the end. The desert table was an added bonus. Hotel was great and we enjoyed the outdoor hot tube that was big enough to for 20 people. Our party very much enjoyed the breakfast buffet and it was reasonably priced with a large assortment of items. We ate a little too early to enjoy the bloody Mary or mimosa bar that started at 9 am. At next year’s wine tasting event we will sleep in.

Room Tip: Either side has great views. The hallways are long, so you may want to stay closer to an elevator i...
