“Perfect Hideaway Weekend!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

My wife and I needed to get away for the weekend and The Wentworth by the Sea was the perfect place.

We took advantage of their spa package weekend - 2 nights, 2 massages, 2 breakfasts, 2 dinners and welcome Champagne/chocolate covered strawberries.

The service, the food, the spa and even the gym had everything you needed for a good workout.

The restaurant staff was attentive and the spa provided 1st class service.

Highly recommend this spot.

Room Tip: We paid the extra $20 to get a ocean view room - and it was well worth it to be able to wake up look...

We discovered the "Wentworth" on line and decided to give it a try as a different birthday experience for the wife. WOW were we surprised as we checked in. An 1850's wooden jewel completely refurbished. (well almost since they are expanding the dining room while we were there.) The Wentworth is much like the Del Coronado in San Diego or the Sagamore in Lake George...old 1800's wooden hotels on prime real estate restored to their former glory. The attention to detail at the Wentworth was incredible..such as cast brass plaques on the walls with room numbers and directions. We arrived and were upgraded to a suite with two separate bathrooms with heated floors and a gas fireplace in the sitting room. Everything in the room was fully operable at the finest detail. We ate all our meals at the hotel, wonderful dinners and breakfasts with one of the finest short order chefs preparing the omelettes on line. All the food was Marriott class as were the wines. The $5.00 per day valet service is an investment. While we were there, we encountered an 18 inch snowstorm. When we retrieved our car, the windows were clean and the snow removed. Everything during our three day stay was world class and perfect. Thank you to all the wonderful employees who made our special birthday stay a terrific memory.

We used to visit the Wentworth regularly as it was one of our favorite getaways; but we stopped going several years ago after feeling it was looking worn. We decided to give it another try recently. We visited mid-week and it was at low occupancy, therefore, quiet, except for the dog barking occasionally in the next room. In the past we have always been greeted as Marriott Elite guests, but not so this visit. Evening turndown came late at 8:30, which was surprising since there weren't that many guests. Our room was pleasantly decorated and bright, but the housekeeping was lacking. The room was very dusty and, though not stained, the carpet had crumbs and lint on it. The lampshades were covered in dust, (and eskew-this always bugs me as it takes so little effort to straighten a lampshare), the dust ruffle on the bed was every which way and the robe hook on the bathroom door was broken and, therefore, not usable. The coffee maker was on a slide out tray in the amoire, but the cord was so short, we could not pull it our far enough to access the water well. We were told there would be coffee service in the lobby at 7 AM, but when my husband went down there was none. Someone on staff did get him some from the lounge. Due to the low occupancy the breakfast buffet was not offered, and the menu offerings were mundane and not very good. They are doing restaurant and lounge renovations as the website advises and were doing work during breakfast service; fortunately we were seated on the other side of the room, but nonetheless, we saw and heard the power equipment in use. I am surprised previous reviews remark on the cleanliness of the rooms as this was not our experience. Even the $5. water bottles for purchase in the room were covered in dust. Perhaps our room had not been occupied in quite some time. At the pool it appeared all the chairs were occupied although only a few people were in the pool, (we thought perhaps they were in the outdoor hot tub), but it turned out previous guests apparently just left their towels on the chairs rather than placing them in the receptables provided for used towels. But shame on guest services for not cleaning up the towels and dirty glassware. We really like the idea of this hotel; every room is unique and the bathrooms are interesting in their layout, and the Marina area makes for a nice walk, but housekeeping is certainly lacking in attention to detail as is guest services.

Room Tip: Upper floors facing the Marina have nicer views and tend to be quieter.

For the second year, we chose to celebrate my husband's birthday at the Sunday Brunch. And for the second time, we had a great experience. We were concerned about the noise of the main ballroom and we did not want to be rushed, so requested seating on the porch, We had a lovely table in a quiet area, full of sun, and plenty of attention from our servers. The food is very good and the variety is ample. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that the pricing.

Every Easter my family attends the Easter Brunch at the Wentworth. It is one of the most enjoyable events of the year. The Easter bunny walks around through most of the meal posing for pictures with the guests and passing out chocolates. He/she is accesible to the children and they love it. My grandaughter remembers it and asks to go every year!

The food is by far the best buffet ever. The wait staff is friendly and can never do enough for the guests. The room is decorated for the day with colorful slides.

I come every year from New Jersey to spend the time with family and enjoy this wonderful experience.

Stayed at the Wentworth by the Sea for a getaway weekend in March. Gorgeous location and physical appearance have made this property a landmark for over 100 years. Had a room on the top floor with a great view. The room was comfortable and well maintained. Staff was friendly and attentive. Nothing bad to say about this beautiful hotel!!

Our home is under active renovation, requiring us to vacate recently. So we escaped for an overnight to the nearby Wentworth-By-the-Sea Hotel, and were pleasantly surprised at just how hospitable it was.

Let's be clear from the outset: this is not your father's Wentworth Hotel. That was an era of starched tablecloths (and shirts), of "rusticators" who traveled with trunks and stayed for weeks, and of formality beyond much purpose. No, this is the new Wentworth, salvaged and expanded in 2003 or so, and under the Marriott flag. It was relaxing, friendly, and fun.

We were upgraded to a top floor one-bedroom suite which consisted of a sitting area with a gas fireplace, a king bedroom, and two mirror-image bathrooms at either end of the unit. It was clean, quiet, and enjoyed a nice view of downtown Portsmouth and the Naval Shipyard. It is easy to see why those from "not here" would find the Wentworth to be an enjoyable escape as well. It is a first class reminder of what life was like in "grande dame" hotels, but now modernized and contemporary.

I've driven past the Wentworth for many, many years now, but my view of it after our stay simply won't be the same. It's gone from being an interesting historical relic to, well, a place I'd check into again. Happily so.

Room Tip: I suspect the top floor rooms in the original wing are quieter than the lower floors. They also comm...
