“A welcome escape”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

A wealth of history, charm, and hospitality await you at the Nutmeg Inn. Our stay could not have been more pleasant - beginning with the warm welcome from Innkeepers Lynne and Mark. The attention to detail that was effortlessly put forth was worthy of five-stars, not to mention the scrumptious homemade breads set out in the afternoon & bountiful breakfasts provided by the Innkeepers. We cannot wait to return in the cooler months, to enjoy the hearth and winter sports in the area! Thank you!

Read previous reviews about how great this place is, and they are all spot on. I am not really a fan of B+B's, but there is no doubt I will return here in the future. After a day of hiking this weekend, we checked in, were greeted warmly, and given a tour of this historic building. It is rustic in the truest sense, and has the hominess that you want in a B+B. Mark and Lynne truly care about your experience. We brought a bottle of wine, but had no cups, so Lynne kindly broke out some nice wine glasses, which we enjoyed on the deck overlooking the heated pool and beautiful landscape.

We stayed in the "Sage" room, which was clean, cozy, and had a good-sized shower and comfortable bed. The floors aren't overly creeky, like you would expect from such an old building.

If there is one possible concern, there was no air conditioning that I could see. The weather was beautiful on this particular day/night, but if it was hot, this particular room (no cross-ventilation) could get rather uncomfortable, but who knows, they may have extra units they can throw into one of the windows in a pinch (that would be my suggestion if it is not thought of yet).

They get up at ungodly hours to begin preparing fresh breads and breakfast, which was very healthy. I highly recommend this B+B. I know the area very well, and believe me, you get a lot less value at a higher price at 99% of the area's hotels/motels.

Room Tip: We were able to peek into many of the rooms prior to them being populated, and they all seem to have...

Thanks, everyone, for your great reviews. We appreciate your taking the time to post your experience on TripAdvisor. It is our goal to provide a unique B&B experience for our guests. As to Andrew's concern about air conditioning, all guest rooms are cooled by a central air conditioning system with vents in each room. The system worked very well during the heatwave we had earlier this summer. We hope to see everyone again soon!

From the beginning, my wife Robin and I were treated like family or old friends. Mark and Lynne had just finished a renovation that included copper piping, sprinklers and smoke detectors throughout--all aesthetically and meticulously done. Because we have our own sawmill, we discussed the beautiful woodwork visible everywhere, from the 12" to 16" wide pine floorboards to the rough-hewn hardwood beams everywhere. We even inspected the newly-installed state of the art drainage field, worthy of a small hotel double the size of Nutmeg Inn. (No drain backup here for at least 100 years!)
Surfaces sparkled or glowed softly. Though I did not play any pool or billiards, the color of the 100 year old table caused aesthetic arrest every time I passed through the room to the deck outside. I did swim in the nicely set in-ground pool, and found it refreshing, and suitable for doing laps; though children could also safely enjoy the shallow end.
The poached pears at breakfast were perfect, as was the souffle; cinnamon french toast to die for! Coffee well-made (we are snobs used to shade-grown and fresh-brewed) available in thermoses as you wish, along with homemade muffins, and biscuits and spread. Everything top-end and very thoughtfully done! (Five Stars!)

My wife had the great pleasure of staying with mark and lynne this past Saturday. From the moment we arrived they were accommodating and ready to assist us with anything we needed. After our long drive, it was a pleasant surprise to see muffins and coffee waiting for us upon our arrival.

It was clear we were staying in an extremely well preserved antique home and one they were both extremely proud of. You will be amazed at the quality construction that is almost impossible to find anymore. Exposed wooden beams and wide plank construction are everywhere. A tour of the property was in order and for those who like to know the history of the places they stay, you will not be disappointed. Ask to see the documented history of the property. It is incredibly interesting.

After our night out (we were there for a wedding in Meredith) a few additional nice touches were noticed. The front storm door was propped open which made getting back inside a breeze and the night light in our bathroom made finding our way around a piece of cake. And don't forget the pastries which are a nice treat at the end of a great night.

Breakfast the next day was as advertised. Everything was home made from scratch. We had the poached pears with vanilla yogurt, followed by freshly baked bread and cinnamon rolls and finally and scrambled egg bake with a variety of fresh ingredients. We did not go away hungry.

Due to our hectic schedule (we arrived late and had to leave early) we were not able to take advantage of some of the other amenities but it only gives us more of a reason to return, which we will and without hesitation.

I think I can speak for everyone that was there this past weekend, Mark and Lynne did an outstanding job taking great care of us. For our next night away in the lakes region, it won't be where should we stay, it will be... is there any room at the inn?

Congratulations to you both on your grand opening. It was a tremendous success and Jess and I wish you only the best.
