Elm City Brewery has always been one of my favorite places to go out to eat in Keene. First, it is situated in the Colony Mill, which is an old mill building that used to make woolen garments, including uniforms for the Union troops during the civil war. It has a lot of charm. You can eat in the dining room, in the bar, out in the brew hall (the area where you can see the large brewing tanks, and also have a great view of the outdoors), or outside if the weather is suitable. We have been dining there for 11 years, and have always had excellent service from friendly waitstaff. One of the draws for us, aside from the fact that they brew excellent beer, is that they use local ingredients on the menu. They make their own sauces, dressings, and salsa (which is amazing!) and soups using local produce, milks and eggs. Local cheese is found in many unique sandwich choices and the specials of the day often reflect what is in season. The VT Spinach Salad, which is one of my favorite lunches, uses both VT cheese and maple syrup from Stuart and John's Sugar House in Westmoreland. Not only is the food good, but you can feel good about eating there.
