My wife and I were visiting friends in Moultonborough. My friend and I were science teachers in the same school for many years. I taught environmental science and Mike taught biology. We used to take students to Five Rivers Environmental Center in Albany N.Y. In addition to that venue we have visited many other environmental locations. This Squam Lake facility, in my opinion, rates as a most fabulous place for visitors of any age. The trails are well maintained. The exhibits provide a realistic glimpse of animals most of us would never be able to see. Unlike a zoo, the up-close views of mountain lions, otters, bald eagles and black bears were very interesting. Interactive displays meant for school children were educational for the four of us, even with our science backgrounds. I have read about the price problem, but I would say it was worth every penny. My wife usually loves the gift shop best, and this is a fine one, but her praise for the educational value of this center was extraordinary. As part of our experience, we took the 1 1/2 to 2 hour of Squam Lake on a pontoon boat. Our tour guide was interesting and informative. He answered questions as we cruised the lake. He explained why the water is so clean, and pointed out places to swim, hike, or camp around the lake. He is an active user of the trails. The large tour boat on Lake Winnipesaukee is nice but a 20 person personal tour is better(in my opinion).
