The Henniker House, in Henniker, New Hampshire
We stayed here for a long weekend while our daughters were at Girl Scout Camp in nearby Antrim. The large Victorian house is in downtown Henniker, right alongside the Contoocook River. We stayed in the Balcony Room, which features, as its name implies, a private balcony, with a table and chairs, overlooking the river. The room has a king bed plus a daybed, and the large bathroom boasts a whirlpool/jet tub big enough for two. The room was decorated with antique furniture, handmade rugs and tasteful textiles. It was spotlessly clean, airy and bright, the air conditioner worked just fine, and there was plenty of hot water.
The hosts, Kate and Phil, were welcoming, friendly and extremely knowledgable about the area. The inn has two cats, very friendly and playful, but they are not allowed in the guest rooms. Breakfast is served in a large, sunny room overlooking the river; the room is filled with books and clean, comfortable furniture.
Kate makes breakfast into a mealtime to be shared with new friends, drinking coffee and tea and discussing everything the area has to offer. Our first morning, Kate made broccoli quiche with bacon, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and a choice of many teas. Personally, I don't care for broccoli, but the quiche was full of cheese and cooked perfectly. Other options, such as cereal and granola were available. Our second morning, Kate made lovely, puffy, baked apple pancakes. They were absolutely wonderful - baked just right, with tender apples and plenty of cinnamon. On our last day, Kate served a baked oatmeal breakfast. This was a three-inch-high block of oatmeal and spices, warm and chewy, kind of like a big block of the topping on a good fruit crisp. My husband likened it to a soft, thick, chewy oatmeal cookie. Yummy.
The Henniker House is within easy walking distance to several restaurants (try Que Pasa) and shops; bring a bathing suit or fishing gear to enjoy the Contoocook River, and walking shoes for the woodland trails (good berry picking). Kate knows where all the local attractions are, too.
Our hosts were friendly, our room was fantastic, the breakfast was delicious, and the cats were fun, too. I highly recommend the Henniker House. I'm sure we'll be back!
