“Best Location on the Beach and Outstanding Service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2010

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Ashworth 4/9 - 4/11/10 and really enjoyed our stay. I have been going to Hampton Beach for many years now. The Ashworth has an excellent reputation and I've always wanted to try it. I've been there for Sunday brunch in the past and their ballroom is absolutely gorgeous.

We stayed in room #256. It was a good sized room, with two queen sized beds, a chair, a flat screen TV, granite counter in the bathroom and a large showerhead. It was ocean view, with a small triangle shaped balcony. The rate was $311 for two nights, which included breakfast.

I've read the mixed reviews on the Ashworth and here is my opinion. It is, hands down, the nicest hotel that is directly across from the street. We walked up to a local coffee shop and they asked where we were staying. They commented that the best two hotels, that were the cleanest, were the Ashworth and The Blue Jay. We walked by the Blue Jay and it is a good block away from the beach, on a busy street, while the Ashworth is right across the street from the beach. They are on opposite ends of the beach (I prefer the Ashworth side as it is not as busy). The Blue Jay looks like more of a motel, while the Ashworth is a full service hotel. I think recommendations from the locals speak volumes, so it's great to see they are in synch with Trip Advisor members.

ROOM:
Room 256 is the closest ocean view room to the beach. Ocean front is literally right around the corner of your balcony. I wasn't expecting the view of the scaffolding on the Ashworth's other building next door and the loud air conditioning unit directly below the balcony prevented you from hearing the ocean, but you could see a nice view of the ocean while laying in bed. The balcony was tiny and shaped like a triangle. You could barely fit two standing adults and it would not fit a chair. The room was spacious and clean. The flat screen TV was a nice touch. The granite counters in the bathroom were brand new and there is a huge showerhead in the bathroom with great water pressure. All top notch. The mattress in the bed next to the window was not new and my boyfriend and I literally rolled right into each other in the center. There was a quilted mattress pad, so it was soft, but definitely sagged right in the middle.

SERVICE:
The Ashworth stands out with excellent, friendly service. Check in was very friendly (even at 10:30 p.m. on a rainy night) and the valet service was a nice touch. Our car was parked directly across the street from the hotel, which allowed us to easily get things when we needed them. The valet helped us take our luggage out of the car. We brought the luggage rack up to our room. It's small things like this that you won't see in other Hampton Beach hotels that makes the Ashworth stand out. My one suggestion with Service would be to have more than one person answering the phone. When I called to make my reservation, I was placed on hold 5 times while the girl answered other calls, saying she was the only one there at the moment. It was not a good first impression and I finally said that I couldn't keep holding.

POOL:
Where else will you get an indoor pool, in a full service hotel, right next to the beach? The Ashworth definitely stands out here as well. There is an indoor entrance to the pool (another reviewer incorrectly stated that the only way to access the pool was to go outside), unfortunately, the door at the end of the hall was jammed and would not open. The housekeeper worked with the front desk and maintenance to try to resolve the issue for us. While this is certainly excellent service, it was also a safety issue as the door would not open from either the inside or the outside. There are three doors that allow entry to the pool. Two would not open. We had to walk through the lobby, go outside, walk by the restaurant and go in through another entrance. Once inside the pool area, my boyfriend was able to pound on the door to unjam it. Perhaps the humidity in the pool area made it stick. The pool is quite large, with a deep end. There are chairs around the pool. It was in a greenhouse style building, which we could see from our balcony. We had to call for some towels, which were brought promptly by the housekeeper who tried to unlock the door.

FOOD:
We had a coupon for breakfast included in our package. The coffee shop is off of the hotel lobby and was jam packed both days. This is a popular place with the locals! Service was slow (only two women waiting on tables), but friendly. We were told when we checked in that we could order whatever we wanted on the menu. The first day, we were charged an extra $6 and were shown the fine print on the back of our coupon that said food allowance was $8 and the rest went toward tax and tip. The second day, a different waitress just took the coupon and said we were all set. The blueberry pancakes were excellent. We had a great seat right next to the window and could see the beach.

ENTERTAINMENT:
There was a DJ in the lobby bar both nights and we were surprised that it was packed. It was great to be able to have a drink and dance. The crowd was an interesting mix of evening gowns, capri pants and leather jackets. There are two rooms - the dancing in one and the bar and some tables in another. I think the Ashworth appeals to all types of people looking for a nice place to go.

OVERALL:
We would definitely return to the Ashworth for both a romantic weekend or a week with the kids. You can't beat the location or the service. Yes, it's on the higher price side, but you certainly get what you pay for. The other hotels in Hampton Beach are not even close to the quality of the Ashworth.

I just returned from a mother and daughter trip to hampton beach. My mother being 68 yrs. old. What we endured from a two night stay here would make your blood boil.
Upon arriving, the sliding glass doors to the balcony was all smudged with little sticky hand prints from a toddler. Our beds were found to have sticky candy chunks in them.
BUT... to set the whole thing into a total wreck was the paper thin walls! We had to endure a young couple "going at it" with loud squeals all night long. This was along with their tv being played all night long. A call to the front desk resulted in them getting a phone call to tone it down. I asked for another room for us, especially my mom. My poor mom sat bolt upright when she heard the first scream, thinking someone was getting beaten up. We were never given the exchange of room. We had the exact same thing the second night. PLEASE!!!! I could hear every sorted part of their intimate "playings' and conversations. Even when they were just talking to each other you could hear very clearly what they were saying, even with our tv on. These walls are thin!!!!!! Beware!!! or
you'll be experiencing a XXX time.
Upon checking out, I was asked about my stay with them. I told him I wouldn't be back. He asked why and I told him. He said you should have called us. I explained that I did and that I didn't get the room change. He was nice and pleasant and refunded the second nights stay for us.BUT.... our stay was the most embarrasing thing for my mom and me. An unforgettable, nasty time together.

Thank you for your review. We accommodate many guests each evening and we strive to make their stay a satisfying one. Our goal is to provide a quality stay with outstanding service to all of our guests at a reasonable price. Consequently, it’s disappointing to hear that you and your Mom were disappointed. I’m truly sorry that our efforts were ineffective, this issue should have been addressed immediately to provide a more comfortable environment for all of our guests.

I was pleased to hear that the Front Office personnel gave you a complimentary night stay. Our number one goal is to provide our guests with a memorable and positive guest experience and it affects everyone on property when this is not carried out. We appreciate all reviews, even negative accounts, as they are great tools for constant improvement.

Last year, when the hotel was renovated, additional insulation was used between the floors and walls and extreme carpet pad was used to address potential noise transfer issues. The hotel was built in 1912 and has a lot of charm and character but with that there will always be a few minor trade-offs.

We hope if your travel plans bring you back to the Hampton area, you will allow us the opportunity to make up for this negative experience.

We are again sorry for the inconvenience you endured and appreciate you bringing this to our attention while at the hotel.

Regards,

Peter Coutis, General Manager

We decided to get off the road, due to the very heavy rains and high winds we encountered driving home from Maine. Since we had some happy news to celebrate, we decided to splurge on an ocean-front room somewhere in NH. I called the desk, and the receptionist couldn't have been better. She was intelligent, friendly, helpful, and spoke perfect English. In fact, everyone we encountered wanted to do a good job and make us happy. It's an old pile of a building - ceiling plaster on the hallway floors, etc. - so I was not expecting much, but the room was nicely decorated, with granite countertops in the squeaky-clean bathroom, perfect matresses, and a lovely view. The fried clams at the resturant were the best I've had in 15 years and I even called the chef out of the kitchen to congratulate him, which is something I have never done. I'm from New England and know a good fried clam when I taste one! All in all, it was a very pleasant overnight that came as a total surprise, given that it was off-season.

I stayed in room number 209. What a dump. No writing materials. No dvd player.
Basic cable only. Room was very small. The bathroom was run down.
Bathroom ceiling reaked like urine from the bathroom leaking above.
What a total rip-off. I feel like I was taken advantage of.
Room was worth maybe 50 bucks tops.
The restaurant was another rip-off. Nine bucks for drinks....
You get the picture. I stayed on march 27th-28th.
I would never suggest this place to anyone, ever.

We found the Ashworth on TripAdvisor and thought it would be great for an overnight stay at Hampton Beach. The good aspects were the staff and the location. It was very convenient, had some nice views of the beach (even on the side). The staff was very friendly and helpful and the valets were great. The bad: The rooms were small, but expectedly so for an old hotel. The shower was god-awful; no pressure and the showerhead was falling apart. The room next door had a squeaky bed and we could hear every move they made. EVERY move. The pub on the ground floor played loud, bassy music late into the night. And right now, through no fault of their own, the view from the south side is of burned out pile of wreckage of the Surf Hotel. It's really sad. We probably won't stay here again but it was not terrible.

I want to thank you for taking the time to tell us about your visit to our hotel, your positive comments about our staff’s friendliness and our wonderful location will be shared with staff and are much appreciated.
The Ashworth building in which you stayed was built in 1912 and has a cozy feel to it, we renovated the rooms last winter and look forward to upgrading our televisions in that section to flat panel LCD’s prior to summer.
I do have concern over the problems with your shower experience and will look to resolve that immediately, your willingness to share that is genuinely appreciated.
Your last comment was about our neighbors in the first block past the hotel to the south, on 2/26/2010 we had a fire here in Hampton beach and the Ashworth fortunately had no fire damage. The beach just like the Ashworth has a long history of survival and perseverance and our neighbors and friends will rebuild and continue to improve Hampton beach. At this time we wish them the best with all the work ahead of them and will continue to support them in the future.

Again, I want to thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us.

We look forward to serving you again.

We were there during a crazy NorEaster and could see the ocean right from our room. We didn't go out much because of the weather but that didn't matter because everything we needed was right at the hotel. The lounge was great! DJ played all night and everyone was on the dance floor. During the summer season, I'm sure there it is even more lively. The indoor pool was under renovations during our stay but is supposed to be open soon. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. We are already planning our next overnight getaway to the Ashworth.
