“Historic home is just a few minutes drive from Portsmouth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

This historic home is located in a quiet neighborhood that seems almost rural. However, it is only a few minutes drive from the tourist attractions and restaurants of nearby Portsmouth. It was built around 1810 by the Pickering family and, no doubt, contains a lot of history. The place is attractive both inside and outside and the guest book contains names and comments from people throughout the world. The owners, Julia & Steve, are very outgoing, friendly people. This B&B is not only clean and well kept but the breakfasts are delicious. We spent several nights here and had french toast, blueberry pancakes, egg casserole, and bacon & eggs for breakfast. There was something different each morning. The place has WIFI and a living room area which the guests can use. Other bed and breakfast inns only promise but this one delivers. When you visit the attractive city of Portsmouth, consider booking a few nights at 1810 Pickering House.

My wife and I and two other couples from the UK all met up in Boston and spent 6 wonderful nights at 1810 Pickering House as part of our two-week New England reunion with our British friends. As there were three couples, we occupied all 3 rooms and so had the B&B to ourselves.

I had researched this B&B way back in the Canadian winter and I must say all the positive reviews are completely accurate. My wife is Vegan and I am Vegetarian and having told Steve this information he made it his mission to research and plan vegan meals and every morning he prepared a different and wonderful special meal for my wife and I, while providing a delicious breakfast to the other two couples.
Thank you Steve and Julia for your warm welcome, your beautiful home, your very useful and accurate "tourist tips" and for the very special effort you went to to accomodate our individual diets. It was great getting to know you and to enjoy your sense of humour. We had a blast and it wonderful to meet Marley ! The location of the B&B is perfect for driving into downtown Portsmouth only 10 easy minutes away. This is a great touring base to travel the area.

If anyone reading this review is a Vegan or Vegetarian, you will be assured of a delicious breakfast and anyone who stays at this B&B will not be disappointed. If we ever make it back to Portsmouth we will be sure to stay here. Thanks again for a delightful stay.... The 6 Brits :)

Room Tip: All the rooms are great.. the Phillips Master Suite is the largest and ideal for a family. We had th...

Julia and Steve's B & B was our second stop on our 10 day trip and we were pleasantly surprised with their big, beautiful home. We had a very large room with a large bathroom. Their home is close enough to downtown Portsmouth to get there in no time at all and yet far enough that it made for a quiet, enjoyable sleep.

They are wonderful hosts and have a great B & B. The breakfast started with a large bowl of fresh cut fruit followed by an egg and sausage casserole that kept us full until dinner.

We were thrilled with this new find and have already promoted to people we met along our trip and to friends and family when we got home.

Thank you again.

1810 Pickering House is a special treat!!!! My room beautiful and comfortable.......everything you need is provided plus hosts that go above and beyond to see to your comfort. They opened there home to me during Christmas so I could spend it with my daughter (they are usually closed). Steve knew I was an amateur photographer so he told me I would get some great shots at the country club next door. He was correct!!!!! The surrounding scenery at sunrise is gorgeous!!!!

Room Tip: Any.......each room is beautiful!!!!!! Julia and Steve's B&B is the best I have ever stayed...

A most beautiful house surrounded by greenery just 10 mins from downtown Portsmouth, with excellent hosts in Steve and Julia, who really made us and the children feel completely at home. We are a family of 4 and stayed at the house for a week - a record we were told at the end of our stay. The accommodation was perfect for us as we had 2 separate but connecting rooms with a very spacious and spotlessly clean bathroom, with all mod cons: TV, AC, fresh water every day, chocolates and more! Seriously the best B&B we stayed at during our US trip. The beds were so comfortable I missed them for the rest of our holiday. We highly recommend this B&B to anyone who is looking for a quiet setting right next to the major attractions of the area.

Our second visit to the 1810 Pickering House proved just as comfortable, relaxing, and convenient as our first. Once again, Steve and Julia did all they could to make our stay a truly wonderful weekend. In addition to providing excellent recommendations for activities and dining, we were treated to phenomenal breakfasts (awesome home-grown maple syrup). The new Inn dog, Marley, is just as accommodating as his parents. We're looking forward to our third, fourth and more visits in years to come.
