“Friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

We stay at this hotel once a year when visiting family in the area. We have had a few issues through the years, but we have found the staff to be accommodating. This trip we arrived around 9p.m. to find our king room had been given to someone else. We were put in a double room, but were given a Subway gift card to try to make up for being squished in a double bed! We were there a few nights, went to Maine, then returned for a few more nights. The one major complaint I have about the hotel is the a/c unit in the room. You cannot have the a/c on along with a continuous fan. The unit turns on and off all night and is very loud when it does that. I found an app on my phone that allowed for a little white noise that helped some, but the unit in Room 216 was very loud. We did not visit the breakfast area so I cannot review that. Overall it is a decent place to stay. The bed was comfortable, staff friendly, and the room clean.

Thank you kindly for your review. I'd like to personally apologize for the inconvenience that you experienced at our property in regards to your room type and our a/c units. For future reference, we have 4 rooms on our first floor with standard a/c units that may be more accommodating for you. We appreciate you being a loyal guest and returning to our property. I'm elated to hear our staff provided you with excellent service, they are the heart of our hotel. They have maybe the best variety of any HIX I have been in for breakfast. Nice selection of breads and Greek yogurt and fruits. Front Desk and breakfast staff also very good and accommodating.
Only downside is the AC units are very noisy and I think they need to have the filters cleaned better as my son and I both had bad allergies after staying here.

At check-in we were greeted by two friendly, helpful staff. We had two requests that they were able to quickly accommodate. While I was not recognized as an IHG Rewards member, the staff member did look up and add my number to my reservation without me asking.

The rooms are large and clean. The beds were very comfortable. The bathrooms are a bit small, but the sink is outside of the bathroom which helps.

The breakfast had a large variety of items including eggs, sausage, bagels, cereals, and yogurt. It was actually ready a few minutes before the start time.

The hotel is located at the edge of downtown Durham. It is within walking distance of the stores and restaurants as well as the UNH campus.

I felt the nightly rate was high for the type of hotel and location, but we did book it the day of stay and it had a high occupancy rate due to an event at the university.

Highly recommend this hotel.

Had business at UNH and it's the only deal in town. They don't have a shuttle from train station, and there are no local taxi services, so transportation is walking if you don't have a car. Hotel is clean, and comfortable bed, so that was good. Breakfast is included and decent buffet. Other dining options are the two gas stations or local pizza joint close by. Front desk was friendly and nice.

Hello Elyzabeth A,

Thank you so much for your kind review. Transportation can be a little tough around Durham at times due to no local cab companies being in Durham. There is a bus system that helps a little, but it does require a bit of walking. Our breakfast just received an upgrade adding some healthier options such as Turkey Sausage, Granola Cereal, and additional fruits.

Thank you so much for staying with us and we hope you stay with us again during your next visit to Durham.

Stayed here to visit UNH. Keeping in mind that this is a Holiday Inn and not a Ritz Carlton. With that said....the staff at the front desk were friendly and accommodating. The room was an average size room and very clean. I liked that the sink was outside of the bathroom, allowing two people to get ready at the same time. The breakfast was your average included breakfast at a hotel. The area was clean well stocked for breakfast. Very convenient to UNH. Not much else to say.

We have stayed at this hotel five times with our dog when we visit family in Portsmouth, NH. The staff goes out of its way to be helpful when it comes to your pet. Two great places to walk your dog. One is just across the street and down on the right past the old town hall: a nice little park.
Or, just walk up the hill and in about 10 minutes you will arrive at the UNH campus which is great for dog walking. Lots of good coffee shops in this direction as well. Rooms are a little old and worn, but it was not easy to find a pet friendly hotel in this area, so I consider this a gem. An upgrade to the rooms would make this a five star dog hotel.

Room Tip: All dog friendly rooms are on the first floor

Hello Jed B,

Thank you so much for your response. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay here in Durham. We cannot express that enough. Your loyalty is appreciated. Our proximity to the campus of the University of New Hampshire makes us an ideal hotel for anyone visiting the campus, and if they have an additional dog as a family member, they are welcome as well!

We also have just undergone a new face lift in our breakfast room, with new, healthier items added to our breakfast. We have added more fruit, turkey sausage, wheat bread & English muffins, an oatmeal bar, and healthier Kellogg cereals!

We look forward to your next stay here in Durham.

My husband and I recently stayed at this hotel. We wanted to be located close to the UNH campus and unfortunately, Durham has few accommodation choices.
Some of the lamps in our room had cobwebs inside of them and the plastic lamp shades were damaged and also looked like they had not be cleaned in a long time. The beds were lumpy.
The floor in the breakfast room was dirty especially around and in back of a trash can .It looks like staff were too lazy to move the can when they were vacuuming. The food looked unappetizing and some of the pastry offerings were dry and old.
When we returned to the hotel one night, we found that the outer security door had been propped open for who knows how long. My husband removed the barrier and closed the door. Near that entrance stands a plant, about 6 ft. in height, that appears to be dying with many dead brown leaves still attached to it.
The hotel is old but still there's no excuse for such poor housekeeping and carelessness particularly when it comes to the safety of the guests.

Room Tip: Drive a few more miles and find a hotel in Portsmouth!

Dear Guest,

I personally apologize for the bad experience you had when you stayed here in Durham. We appreciate all reviews and will forward this to my Housekeeping Supervisor to make sure this doesn't happen again. I will also speak with our breakfast attendants to ensure cleanliness is kept up. I completely agree with you about the propped open door, it is unfortunate that some guest's do not respect safety and I apologize for that. We are constantly doing walk's around the hold and always close the outside doors if they are ever propped. I assure you this isn't a comment occurrence.

I hope you will give us another try on your next visit to Durham. If you are in the area, please contact me directly so we can discuss your future stay. I will personally make sure your next stay with us is a great one. sgodin@hiexdurham.com

Thank you again.
