Every once in a while, I have a craving for Kobe. And since the advent of NH's top Kobe restaurant in Concord, one hopes that one's craving gets the necessary fix - especially at a 45-55-65 dollar range per plate.
Although the Kobe preparation and cut itself did not disappoint, the entire surrounding accompaniments were utterly disastrous for a $56 plate, including sides.
The server was courteous and gracious, but to tell the customer that 5 shrimp are included in the cocktail app, to then return and mention only three after ordering is simply careless. Added one more, but for over $13, I was wishing I had ordered the oysters and Kobe pops combo for lesser money.
Moving on to the main. The plate arrived ice cold. This meant the vegetable (asparagus) under the Kobe was also ice cold. The additional side of lobster Mac and cheese (which costs more) was also cold. Not ice, but not adequate. Upon sending back the lobster Mac side, kitchen sent back a "new" side with half the portion and none of the lobster. I just decided to eat and run. By this point, and forgetting to never order asparagus out of season, as each stalk needs four to equal one summer in season thickness, the only thing prepared well was the steak.
However, buyer beware: the "oscars" option, which proclaims an addition of a crab cake, hollandaise and asparagus is one of the biggest scams north of Manhattan. The steak arrived with a ton of delicious "jus" which was extraordinary, but with a smattering of hollandaise and. Crab cake with literally was the size of a silver dollar, and less than inch thick. For adding $6 to the $45 base price, one expects more. As well, the lobster Mac is an extra $4. So I don't know how 45+6+4 =56 but it did on my bill, and I rather left as soon as possible than get in another debate.
With one cocktail and a mediocre Italian red, the bill without tip was a handsome $95. I know this isn't Boston or NYC, but I'd expect far more for this price in NH. High end is a completely different caliber.
Shame, though - as the Kobe itself was superb. But what Broadway star can shine without a good production, chorus and orchestra flanking it properly?
