We spent a cold, snowy weekend here in February and it couldn't have been nicer. The house itself is wonderful. We stayed in Lila's room and really loved it. The furnishings are charming and the bed was extremely comfortable. We didn't spend too much time in the room since we had a busy weekend of hiking and socializing, but it certainly would have been a nice place to just hang out, relax and read a good book.
The public spaces are also really nice. The living room is cozy and is a perfect spot to settle down in for afternoon tea. If you like cats like we do, it's a bonus to have one of them consent to curling up on your lap for a snooze. The dining room is very comfortable and provides the perfect setting for breakfast. Which brings me to the food...
We've stayed at a number of B&B's, but none that could come close to matching the food here. Sandra is such a great cook! There were two choices for breakfast each morning and they both sounded so delicious that it was almost impossible to choose. The coffee was excellent (not a sure thing in New England) and as soon as you sit down at the table a basket of scones, hot out of the oven, magically appears. That would make a fine breakfast by itself, but it's just the appetizer. From creative egg dishes to pancakes and crepes the breakfasts were amazing! These are definitely five star meals to start the day.
The area around Bristol is very nice and the perfect place for a weekend in any season. We're hikers and visit New Hampshire very frequently, and this is one of our favorite areas. On the winter weekend that we were there this trip we explored some new areas in and around Cardigan State Park that we hadn't tried before. The snowshoeing was wonderful! Hiking and other outdoor sightseeing is equally nice in this area in pretty much any month of the year. Clay and Sandra are both avid hikers and know the area extremely well and can definitely help plan a good day out. Oh, and at the end of day of hiking it's pretty great to return to the B&B and find a plate of freshly baked cookies waiting for you when you come in the door.
When we were leaving, Sandra asked us for suggestions about what they could do to improve the experience of staying at the Henry Whipple House. We couldn't think of a single thing. We will surely be back soon!
