We love Reno. Our favorite place to stay was Fitzgerald's. It was right downtown, across the street from Eldo, Silver Legacy, Circus x2, other major casinos within walking distance and the best hamburger joint in the world just two doors down.

One of the executive hosts from Fitzgerald's that got laid off when they closed gave us a free stay at his new casino, Grand Sierra. We thought, let's give it a try.

Overall it's just too big, indifferent staff (in the casino and front desk), plus it's so far away from downtown.

Johnny Rockets - our server was soooo friendly... until... I got up to pay the check. My partner had left a large tip on the table but for some reason our server thought we had 'stiffed' her because we didn't hand her the tip at the register. She gave us both the coooooldest shoulder ever. (I hope she was ashamed of herself when she realized what a bad judgment call she made.)

Noisy rooms - Even with the tv on we heard everything outside the door. There was a family across the hall and they were in-and-out till 3 a.m. slamming doors, yelling, etc. When that finally quieted down the people in the room on the other side of our headboards started doing the wild thing that went on till 5 a.m.

Check out - We had two free nights and decided to stay a third night. Upon check in we were told just that... we were only going to be charged for the third night. After the first 2 nights we decided to check out early and go someplace else. Surprise! The front desk told us we couldn't check out without being charged for the third night and if we didn't like it we could take it up in guest services.

NEVER EVER WILL WE STAY THERE, GAMBLE, OR EAT THERE AGAIN.

We have stayed in this hotel for years. Have always been impressed until this last stay.
The place was dirty. We stayed in the Summit Rooms. They were dirty. The light in the shower had no cover. The bare wires were exposed along with the light bulb. Half the lights in the room didn't work. The floors were dirty.
The entire hotel appeared not to have been cleaned in a very long time!
The food was BAD. Served cold. Looked like it was yesterdays left overs.
Have cancelled a reservation we had in August.
We will not go there again.

I am accustomed to Hotwire overrating their lodging offerings, but 4 stars for the GSR is way over the top. It's a decent enough property and the owners are doing a good job of maintaining this 30+ year old facility, but don't expect a 4 star resort. As is often the case in Reno (and Vegas), these properties make a lot of their dough on nickels and dimes. $5 resort fee and a $12.99 per day internet fee made my Hotwire deal not such a deal in the end.

The GSR is isolated. You can't stroll to another casino or eat anywhere else without getting in your car or a cab. The hotel is surrounded by parking lots. Beyond that is a freeway and commercial and warehouse zones. The food is OK but limited. If I were visiting Reno for the first time, Id choose a place downtown...closer to more choices in dining and entertainment.
I'd get a place downtown. At least

What a crap-hole. The staff is rude and unhelpful, lying and non-professional. I booked a non-smoking room with two double-beds. I was refused to get the non-smoking room. Plus, I had to argue for more than an hour to get a room with two double beds! (even though I ordered that). What I was offered is a room with a single bed and one rolling bed - huh? I got two double-beds after a fight. After some hard time arguing with the front desk girl and getting the smoking room, I start to head away from the counter and overhear another clerk asking next customer if they wanted a smoking or non-smoking room - what a bunch of clowns! I asked again and was told the hotel is 100% sold out! On a regular weekend, no golf tournaments around, off-season, looking 50% empty inside and out. The smoking room I got was on the ground floor, with window overlooking outside nightclub - extreme noise level from 9pm to 4am. And then some pothead was smoking marijuana right outside of my room door all night with all smoke getting in the room. The room was dirty, smelly and ugly. Worst experience ever. 1 star for nice (and expensive) restaurant downstairs. Never again.
