I've stayed at the Silver Legacy several times. Every time I'm here I'm impressed with the warmth and helpfulness of the staff. This is a large hotel complex (with El Dorado Resort and Circus Circus hotel) which I enjoy because each has its own personality and accompanying multiple choices for dining. The restaurants alone in this location provide so many options it is almost hard to keep track of them. And if you were to stay here for a long weekend, you could eat in a different cafe/restaurant for every meal. No getting food-bored here.
One time I stayed here I splurged for a spa room. It was luxuriously decorated in golds and maroon and just reeked of elegance. It was plush and lush and I hated leaving it. I can't say how much the visual beauty of the room made me LOVE this place and particularly the spa room.
However, on this visit, a spa room in the same layout was decorated in black and brown, "chrome-ish" furniture. This decidedly stark "modern" feel left me cold. I wanted that old luxurious feeling room back. "Modern" design with chrome and starkness gives no warmth or comfort to the room. I don't know why hoteliers inflict "modern" on us. The Grand Sierra Resort has done the same thing - black and brown and chrome. Hmmmm, I wonder if they share the same interior designers. Don't get me wrong, the room was VERY nice, but not in a design scheme or colors that make me feel at home. Others who like "urban modern" would be in seventh heaven. It is not welcoming or visually comforting to me.
Anyway, given that I stay here (or occasionally the neighboring El Dorado) when I can, all in all, I only deducted one star for the harsh and cold room decor. Think about it. Would you rather slip into a bed with a black cotton bedspread or one that is shimmery with gold and silky maroon plush that looks and feels like it came from an exotic land? It's a no brainer to me.
But I digress. I do love this place for the attentive and extremely friendly and helpful staff, from the shuttle drivers to the desk staff to the restaurant staff to the maids to the security staff... and to a man (or woman), they were always so gracious and wonderful.
The multiple restaurants and bars provide great variety. I ate at Sterlings for the first time and it was a dining delight in a candle-lit atmosphere perfect for couples or even a small group. The service was impeccable, truly impeccable - there when you needed them and inobtrusively keeping an eye on our every need when they weren't. I needn't say my ribeye steak could have been cut with my fork alone. It was tender and perfectly cooked to my liking.
Cafe Sedona is a fun dining experience with both American choices as well as Asian fare. Plus if you want to people-watch this is the perfect place to do so. One day I chose the special which was fish and chips. Holy cow, the fish was three large pieces about six inches long each. I made sure to enjoy the fish down to the last morsel, but was unable to finish all the french fries and only dabbled in the cole slaw. Obviously, portions are not lacking. And with the big pieces of fish they brought a little container with enough tartar sauce for one piece. I asked for more and they charged me for it. Given the other generosities throughout the complex, I thought that uncharacteristically tacky and stingy.
I can't say enough nice about the people and the layout of the entire complex, however. And I did love that huge tub in my room ! Splurge for a spa room if you want a romantic adventure. The view and the setting will make your night special. And when you come up for air, the world is your dining oyster at the Silver Legacy, oh, and did I mention they even have an oyster bar???
Being in Reno is just a little bit exciting anyway, but the Silver Legacy is sure to please whether it is room, food, or entertainment. I always enjoy the huge mining rig under the dome every time I see it. It never fails to amaze. There are also shops aplenty for those wanting to spend a little somewhere besides the casino. The Silver Legacy is a place you can make your home when visiting Reno since everything you need is under one roof. You'll be hooked and return like I do.
