I admit, the location of Pneumatic Diner was a bit intimidating at first. It is on the second floor or what seems to be a converted tiny apartment building. The tiny restaurant is the size of a coffee shop or tiny bar, and looks like that is what used to be there. Due to the location, they cook the food elsewhere (I think downstairs?) and bring it up to the cooks to assemble the dishes. This presents limitations on the type of cuisine and preparation methods they are able to offer.
But here is the good news about the simple dishes and low key location; this isn't some overpriced swanky up-town place. Pneumatic Diner is casual vegan dining at casual restaurant prices. The atmosphere is the kind you can only get from such small places. I have never experienced the feeling of comfort food, home cooking, casual hang-out at a vegan joint. Vegan places tend to always be so... stuffy. Sometimes, I just want a solid sandwich or pasta, and I don't want to make a big night out of it. I have visited Pneumatic Diner alone for a quick bite as well as hung out for a couple of hours with friends, sipping microbrews and tea. You don't have to be a vegan to enjoy the food here. Both my parents and friends have had firsts in vegan experiences at Pneumatic Diner, and have been VERY happy! They have really made the most out of their location and the simple, solid dishes they serve.
The service is laid back and friendly. It feels like the kind of place where all your friends work, like they opened this little place together so everyone has a place to hang out and eat their favorite food. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if this was part of the inspiration for the place!
Casual comfort food at your vegan friend's place. That seems to sum up Pneumatic nicely!
