We have been staying at the Grand Sierra Resort for many years in their upgraded Summit rooms. Recently when the Resort changed ownership, about 100 units that were privately owned as Hotel - Condominiums and rented out by the Grand Sierra Resort Management spun off to an independent management company that works on behalf of the private individual owners of these deluxe upgraded suites.
Suffice to say, this translates into deep discounts on the nicest rooms that the Grand Sierra Resort has to offer. By simply booking with Indy's Hotel Condominiums or Reno Luxury Resort for internet booking on most major travel websites and directly with their management company. Once you book your room you are done, the Grand Sierra Resort will only be able to confirm your reservation on the day of arrival since both companies use different software platforms. I have had some trouble confirming my reservation with Indy's by telephone but they were quick to respond by email and as they claimed, sure enough on my day of arrival my reservation was at the hotel. The best part is that you don't have to wait in that huge line of people for the standard rooms, just go past that line and there is a VIP section "The Summit" and check in there!
While I was there I overheard several guests that also booked through Indy's complaining about the Grand Sierra Resort not having their reservation, but as I listened it turned out that the guests had declined credit cards, which is the major pitfall of the Reno Luxury Resort/Indy's Hotel Condominiums. It is required that you pay in advance of your stay and you will have to pay the god awful Grand Sierra Resort the $11.38 "Resort Fee" just regular Grand Sierra Resort guests, I made a stink about this since these rooms were separate and the Manager caved and didn't charge me for the "Resort Fee."
Once we checked in, we were not really surprised, Indy's rooms are the nicest that the Grand Sierra Resort has to offer, but the furniture in all the rooms is worn out, but looking at the glass half full, these privately owned units have the least worn out furniture (probably because they don't have high traffic use and the private owners take better care of things unlike the rest of the Grand Sierra Resort rooms). I was excited to see that these rooms will be getting a complete renovation this spring, I remember when the Grand Sierra Resort rooms were renovated in 2005 and the "wow" factor was spectacular.
We have always enjoyed all the amenities that the Grand Sierra Resort has to offer, but over the years we have found other hotels with better rates and since we found this new "secret" way to book rooms at the hotel, we will probably never stay anywhere else, their rates are dirt cheap as far as luxury rooms go, but beware, the Grand Sierra Resort will try and entice you with teaser rates, but that is for their rooms that look like they were straight out of the 1970's, so if you don't want to stay in a room comparable to the Cal-Neva or the Sands, just compare these rooms to that of the luxury rooms at the Peppermill, Atlantis, Eldorado, Silver Legacy or heck, their prices are usually 30-50% cheaper than the Grand Sierra Resort for the exact same room!
Room Tip: We stayed in the bigger rooms, the XL which is quite a bit larger and we highly recommend these room...
