We have stayed previously at Excalibur, MGM, Monte Carlo, Stardust, and the Flamingo. We opted for the Tropicana because of the price point and the reviews were good. It's just all in what you're looking for in a Vegas vacation. The room we had, front tower-11th floor, had a view of the strip. It was very clean, comfortable bed, roomy and quiet. The negatives were the a/c did not appear to be working properly and was not able to cool the room. We called maintenance the 2nd day and it seemed ever so slightly better, but was still lacking.....the room was probably around 72 - 74 even though the thermostat was set on 64. Temps outside were right around 100 for our five day trip. Another issue seemed to be the hot water (or lack thereof). Periodically we would not have hot water....we did not call about it as it just seemed to come and go and never caused any issues at shower-time.
The pool area was nice and we never had a problem finding a lounge chair which were padded and comfy. The pool was another draw for us to this resort and it did not disappoint. Through the week when it was less crowded we were allowed to use a float even though we were told there were not suppose to be floats in the pool (Las Vegas law??).....by Friday the rule was enforced.
We didn't have a lot of interaction with the staff, but those we did speak with were courteous and efficient.
We ate at the Beach Cafe which I guess got its name because it was soooo hot. Felt like it was about 80; I think we would have been better off sitting outside where there was a breeze. Not sure if it was like that all the time or just an a/c issue on the day we ate lunch there. The food was decent and priced about average for Las Vegas......MOST food in Vegas is overpriced and this place was no exception. Compared to the hotel cafe across the street at MGM it was cheaper.
This resort is very easy to get around in and the casino is small and not crowded. There's just not a lot going on at the Tropicana and it's a looooong walk to center strip where there's so much more to do. We were a little turned off too by the beer prices.....everything's expensive in Vegas these days, but if you're center-strip you can find some deals that are an easy walk to get to. Another thing that's a bit of an irriatation is the resort fee. We were aware of it when we booked, but it's a bit irritating to pay $17/day for the "extras" and then find you have to pay to use the business center's computer.....geez, really? We didn't have a real need for it and you could use it to printout airline documents for free.....it's just the principal of it.
Overall it was a good stay, but we'll most likely stay mid-strip next time.
