When I read these horrible reviews, I usually brush them off as being written by someone who would find something wrong no matter what. I’m not that person. I’ve been traveling for over 30 years and have never been treated as badly as I was last weekend at New York New York.
Because my wife and I were celebrating our anniversary we decided to stay on the strip in a luxury hotel. We reserved a three night stay in a king non-smoking room. At check-in we were told that there were only rooms with two queen beds left and they were all on smoking floors. The gentleman checking in assured us that it would only be for one night and there was nothing he could do. He told me that they give out the non-smoking rooms based on the time you check in and once there gone you are forced to take what’s left. He informed me that even though you specifically reserve a non-smoking room, there are no guarantees – read the fine print. After discussing moving us to another MGM property and other options (all impossible to do) for about 20 minutes, my wife asked to see a manager. When she informed him that she had health issues and would not stay in a smoking room, they miraculously found a non-smoking room on the 4th floor. It was not the type of room we paid for, but we were assured that if we stopped down in the morning we would be moved to an upgraded room for the remainder of our stay.
The hallways on the fourth floor were worn and dingy and the room was reminiscent of a 1960’s motel. The carpeting was worn, the safe didn’t work and there was no remote control for the TV. The beds were very soft and uncomfortable and the view was of the side of the next building over. It was a horrible experience to say the least.
When we went down the next morning and found the check-in clerk to move rooms, he informed us that he did have rooms to move us to, but he could not upgrade us to the next level of room (Broadway or a suite) because again they were all sold out. We indicated that we basically stayed in the broom closet for the previous night (he agreed with our description) and were promised an upgrade the next day. He politely said there was nothing he could do because everything was sold out. We asked him why he promised us something the night before that he now could not deliver. He did not have an answer so we asked to speak with a manager. What a mistake! He told us the manager’s name was Angela Turner, but I never was able verify. She came over and immediately started asking me questions like I was on trial.
I explained the situation and she told me there was nothing she could do and she didn’t understand why we were upset. I told her that we expected a certain level of amenities in a 4 star hotel and we were placed in an inferior room. Her response was: “What give you the impression this is a 4 star hotel? It doesn’t say that on our web site does it?” She kept asking me what was wrong with the room knowing full well that they put us there as a last resort. She refused to do anything but explain to me why I was wrong. After about ten minutes of listening to her talk down to me we decided to just check out and move to another hotel. We went down the street to the Venetian and were treated like royalty.
Other than the room the rest of the place was just ok. It doesn’t compare to places like the Venetian, Bellagio, MGM, Paris, Caesar’s etc. It is dark and smoky and hard to navigate through. I’d definitely move down the strip and stay somewhere else.
